A lob pass is an aerial throw for a receiver behind opponents. It’s much slower than a bullet pass, giving the receiver enough space to ditch the blockers and fetch the ball a few yards away. But with Madden 23’s season 3 and the new Skill-Based Passing, the question is, how should players throw a lob pass? This detailed guide has the answer.

How to Throw a Lob Pass in Madden 23

Throwing lob passes in Madden 23 is straightforward. When in the passing pocket, tap the farthest receiver’s buttonwithout aiming. Each receiver has a designated button shown over his head. Tap that button once to lob the ball to that particular player.

A lob pass is beneficial when the receiver is behind the opponent’s defense line. But it increases the chance of interception as the ball lands a few yards away from the receiver.

Tips for Throwing High-Accuracy Lob Passes

It’s not just the best quarterbacks that throw the best lob passes. With the following pro tips, any Madden 23 player can master passing.

  • Don’t drift back before the lob pass. When in the passing pocket, hold the position and throw the ball while standing still. Lob passing when drifting back decreases the accuracy.
  • Block before throwing a lob pass. Have at least one blocker to support the quarterback. Otherwise, he won’t have enough time to reposition, find the receiver, and throw the ball.
  • Don’t hold the pass button. Pressing and releasing the receiver’s button makes a touch pass, not a lob pass. So, for a long, high-arching throw, tap the button quickly.

The Ideal Setting for Lob Passing

With Madden 23’s latest updates, players can now change the throwing setting to suit lob passing. For more control over the throws:

  • Change the Passing Type to Placement.
  • Set Free-Form Reticle Max Distance to Far.
  • Keep Reticle and Meter visibility on.

The Difference Between a Lob, High, and Free-Form Pass

In Madden NFL 23, a lob pass is slower than a high pass. It’s often a deep pass, giving the receiver more time to reposition and catch. But a free-form pass is totally different. It’s a high-arced or short pass into an open area a few yards away from the receiver.

As for the difference in controls, players make a lob pass by tapping the receiver’s button. And they turn it into a high pass by doing the same while aiming. However, for a free-form pass, they must press the left trigger (LT or L2), throw, and lead the ball with the left joystick.

Madden NFL 23 is available now for Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.
