Even the best quarterbacks fail to pass the ball sometimes, and even the best receivers get blocked by defenders. So, what’s the option when passing seems impossible? Should players give up the ball and accept the turnover, or should they play it strategically with a throw-away? That’s right; throwing the ball away can be a Madden 23 player’s savior. This guide explains everything there is to know about this technique.

How to Do a Throw-Away in Madden 23

While in the passing pocket, drift back andpress the right stick (R3) to throw the ball away. Use the left stick to aim for one of the out-of-bounds areas. To do the same on PC, press X on the keyboard before passing the ball. Do not throw the ball away while standing still in the passing pocket. Otherwise, the quarterback gets penalized.

Unlike a pass, a throw-away doesn’t have a receiver. In other words, the passer tosses the ball out of bounds. This is often done to avoid losing the ball or facing fumbles or turnovers.

When to Throw the Ball Away

Do a throw-away when all the receivers are blocked, and the chance of interception is high. In Madden 23, throwing the ball away is an excellent technique to prevent losing the ball and avoid sacks or turnovers.

To throw a ball with no penalties, two conditions must be met:

  • The quarterback must be outside the tackle box.
  • The ball should cross the line of scrimmage.

A throw-away that doesn’t match these conditions is a foul or, more technically, an Intentional Grounding.

Other Techniques to Use Instead of Throw-Away

In the new Madden 23 season, there’s more than one way to get around sacks, turnovers, and interceptions. Other techniques to use instead of throw-away are pump fake and quarterback give-up. Here’s how to do each.

To pump fake, double-tap the receiver’s button. This allows the quarterback to fool the opponents with a fake passing gesture, creating a gap in the defense line.

For a quarterback give-up, hold the LT button and press the right joystick (R3) simultaneously. With this move, the quarterback throws himself to the ground and saves the ball without throwing it away.
