Madame Web is one of the most-anticipated superhero projects of 2024 and is another attempt by the production giant to build its Sony Spider-Man Universe. The Madame Web trailers seemingly confirmed that Spider-Man wouldn’t appear in the movie. However, a recent rumor suggests that Madame Web could have seen the friendly neighborhood superhero making an appearance in the film.

While appearing on the latest episode of The Hot Mic with Jeff and John podcast, insider Jeff Sneider revealed that Sony initially wanted Andrew Garfield to be the Spider-Man of the Madame Web world. The production studio altered its course and decided to include Tom Holland's Spider-Man. Yet, Sony acknowledged a timeline error caused by Madame Web reportedly being set in the '90s, prompting them to reshoot and eliminate any references to Spider-Man and a specific year. Sneider also indicated that the primary reason for the movie's reshoots was to eliminate all '90s references, ensuring alignment with the timelines. Additionally, the insider cautioned fans by saying they shouldn’t expect any '90s references in the movie.

Given the close connection of Madame Web's comic book tales to Spider-Man's, it initially appeared impossible to envision a feature film for her without some involvement from Spider-Man. Fans believed it would be interesting to see the team of Spider-Women being a part of Garfield or Tobey Maguire's universe. It could have given fans a brief glimpse of the character's current status. Unfortunately, fans will have to wait a little longer to learn which version of Spider-Man they will see in the future. In Spider-Man comic books, Madame Web is a superhero with mutant abilities, including clairvoyance powers. Her extrasensory powers enable her to acquire information about nearly anything. The Madame Web trailers seemed to confirm the film will narrate the titular character's origin. It will also spotlight her psychic abilities and solidify her place in Sony's Spider-Man universe.

The Madame Web movie could also be significant in tying things between Sony's Spider-Man Universe and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Madame Web can switch between universes, so it wouldn’t be surprising if the film went on to fix the plot hole created by earlier Sony movies that featured MCU characters. Although Sony Pictures kept the movie under wraps for a while, the Madame Web trailers seem promising, and the film could serve as a strong starting point for building something substantial in Sony's Spider-Man universe. Fans are already pumped up for the movie’s release and can’t wait to see the team of extraordinary women taking the fight to the deadly villains.

Madame Web is scheduled to hit theaters on February 14, 2024.
