During the September 14 Nintendo Direct broadcast, Nintendo pulled back the curtain on Luigi's Mansion 2 HD with some new gameplay footage and revealed the game's release window. Originally released on the Nintendo 3DS as Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon in 2013, Luigi's Mansion 2 HD will have enhanced graphics and motion controls that take advantage of what the Nintendo Switch consoles are capable of.
Though the game is a sequel to 2001's Luigi's Mansion, Luigi's Mansion 2 HD features an entirely different set of levels and missions for Luigi to overcome in his search for Mario, who has gone missing again. Taking place in Evershade Valley, Luigi's Mansion 2 HD gives the green-clad ghostbuster new tools to work with in addition to his trusty Poltergust. These tools range from a Strobulb that emits a powerful flashbang to stun ghosts, to a variety of environmental hazards that Luigi can take advantage of depending on the level. With each level themed around places such as a greenhouse and an ice palace, Luigi is tasked with searching for fragments of the Dark Moon and stopping King Boo once again.
However, Nintendo fans will have to wait for some time to get their hands on Luigi's Mansion 2 HD, as the game will not be out until the summer of 2024. The game was originally revealed during the June 2023 Nintendo Direct under its 3DS title of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. During the September Direct, Luigi's Mansion 2 HD had a two-minute segment midway through the broadcast. Though most elements from the 3DS version were retained as far as level design and objectives, the user display for Luigi's Mansion 2 HD showed an icon for the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller on the bottom right. This may indicate that players can use the gyro motion capabilities of the Pro Controller or the Joy-Con to control the camera during certain levels.
Just as it was in the 3DS release, Luigi's Mansion 2 HD will have the ScareScraper as its main multiplayer mode. With each player taking control of Luigi, the ScareScraper will have players race against the clock, and against each other, as they clear floors of ghosts, Boos, and other ghastly foes they come across. Though it won't be out for another year, Luigi's Mansion 2 HD joins a growing list of Mario series games that are still in development.
In addition, Luigi's Mansion 2 HD is just the latest game from the 3DS lineup that will make its way to the Switch. Only time will tell what other 3DS titles will make the jump to the Switch family of systems.
