It's been over a decade now since the release of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, but Nintendo has revealed in its latest Direct event that the sequel will be receiving a visually-enhanced version for the Nintendo Switch family of consoles. The recent Nintendo Direct made a plethora of announcements certain to please not only fans of the Luigi's Mansion series of games, but also fans of the Super Mario franchise as a whole.

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, known as Luigi's Mansion 2 in other territories, was originally released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2013. A sequel to Luigi's first haunted adventure that was released in 2001, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon offers more secrets to discover and ghosts to capture in the form of a spooky yet lighthearted action-adventure experience. Though these older titles are still held dear by many Nintendo fans today, the massively-popular Luigi's Mansion 3 has since taken the spotlight by introducing both a co-op campaign and a series of multiplayer mini-games that allow fans to compete against each other.

With the Nintendo eShop service now permanently closed for the 3DS and Wii U consoles, fans of these previous-generation pieces of Nintendo hardware are finding it hard to get their hands on some of these older titles. Much to the surprise of many Luigi's Mansion fans, Nintendo revealed in its latest Direct conference that a "visually-enhanced version" of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon is currently in development, and is set to release for the Nintendo Switch sometime next year. Though little was said about the project and no exact release date was provided, fans of the Luigi's Mansion series can look forward to reliving this nostalgic single-player campaign on more modern hardware.

The visually-enhanced Switch version for Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon isn't the only remake that was announced during this month's Nintendo Direct event however, with a remake of Super Mario RPG also revealed at the presentation and confirmed to be arriving on the Nintendo Switch next year as well. Along with several new tracks and returning characters revealed to be coming in the next Wave of Mario Kart 8 DLC, it's safe to say that June's Nintendo Direct had a lot in store for fans of the Super Mario franchise.

As if that wasn't enough, fans can also look forward to seeing the Mario brothers appearing in a side-scrolling platformer once again with Super Mario Bros. Wonder, a wacky new installment to the Super Mario Bros. series that is slated to release on the Nintendo Switch on October 20th later this year. All things considered, there's certainly a big year ahead for Nintendo fans, particularly those with a fondness for Mario and Luigi.
