Nintendo opened up this afternoon's delayed Nintendo Direct with a special announcement for a previously unrevealed Nintendo Switch game. Introducing Luigi's Mansion 3, planned for release on Switch in 2019. Nintendo noted that Luigi's Mansion 3 is a working title, so it will likely be changed prior to launch in 2019.

Luigi's Mansion 3 was shown only briefly during the 40-minute Nintendo Direct. Though unlike Nintendo's other recent announcements, such as the next Metroid Prime and today's Animal Crossing reveal, the company did have gameplay to share. The 45-second trailer featured about 15 seconds of Luigi getting spooked and sucking up ghosts with his trusty vacuum, the Poltergust. It doesn't get more authentically Luigi's Mansion than that.

Nintendo mentioned little beyond what was shown in the Direct regarding Luigi's Mansion 3. Nintendo of America VP Doug Bowser did describe the announcement as evidence of "something for everyone in the ever-growing Nintendo Switch library," though. Nintendo clearly sees the Luigi's Mansion franchise as an important piece of the company's currently-in-development franchises.

Luigi's Mansion 3 isn't the only game in the franchise currently in development, however. Nintendo also took the opportunity to revisit the previously announced remake of the original Luigi's Mansion, now coming to the Nintendo 3DS. Announced in March earlier this year, Nintendo confirmed that the remake would feature stereoscopic 3D, as well as amiibo functionality.

In today's Nintendo Direct, it was also revealed that the Luigi's Mansion remake for the 3DS would be adding two-player cooperative action. Two players who both separately own a copy of the game will be able to team up and capture ghosts. Finally, to clarify the earlier amiibo announcement, Nintendo said that each of the four supported Luigi amiibo will reveal where Boos are hiding in-game. Luigi's Mansion joins its sequel, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, on 3DS starting Oct. 12.

More Luigi's Mansion news is certain to arrive as Luigi's Mansion 3's launch in 2019 nears, so look forward to future Nintendo Directs for more information.
