Luigi's Mansion 3, the latest title developed by Next Level Games in the Mario spin-off series, is out now. As a direct sequel to Next Level's Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, Luigi's Mansion 3 follows the now-familiar format of the series, with players taking on the role of Luigi as he explores a haunted building and rescues his friends from the ghosts that inhabit it.

Just like it's predecessor, Luigi's Mansion 3 has both competitive and cooperative multiplayer, and up to eight players can work together or oppose each other in the Scarescraper or ScreamPark modes. As well as this, it's also possible to play (almost) all of the game's campaign with a local co-op partner. However, players are only able to begin co-op only after they've unlocked the character Gooigi, so here's how to find him.

Unlocking Gooigi

As a clone of Luigi consisting entirely of luminous green goo (the clue is in the name), Gooigi is fairly easy to spot. To unlock him for co-op play players will need to complete the first set of objectives in Luigi's Mansion 3's 18-hour long campaign. This is done by finishing the Introduction and bringing E. Gadd's briefcase back to his lab.

As Gooigi fills an important role in the game even if he isn't controlled by another player, there'll be a short tutorial on how to use him, after which he is unlocked for use in cooperative play. As such, early adopters who've taken advantage of Walmart's $10-off launch day promotion will most likely be able to jump into co-op on the same day.

Inviting a Friend

Once Googi has been unlocked, players can invite a friend to play as him. To do this they'll need to press the plus button, select "Co-Op", and then "Co-Op" again, then connect two Joy-Cons (or controllers) by clicking in the L and R buttons. After that just leave the menu and Gooigi will be under the control of the second player. This same method is used to add players in all the multiplayer modes, and will most likely remain consistent throughout Luigi's Mansion 3's multiplayer DLC. The co-op is only for local play though, so don't expect to be playing through Luigi Mansion 3's story online.

Since its first introduction as a launch title for the GameCube, Luigi's Mansion has become one of the most popular of the many Mario spin-offs. Now with the addition of a set of new and expanded multiplayer modes, consistent with Nintendo's desire to market the Switch as the centerpiece of a party, the game has broadened its appeal to those who prefer Nintendo's multiplayer-focused titles.

Luigi's Mansion 3 is available now for the Nintendo Switch.
