Fans looking into the files for the newly released Luigi's Mansion 2 HD are spotting some striking similarities to the 3DS version, including a reference to a beloved 3DS feature. The highly-anticipated remake of the Luigi's Mansion sequel officially launched earlier this week, giving fans their chance to dive back into the spooky Evershade Valley. While the remaster finally made the 3DS Luigi's Mansion available on the Switch, fans have already noticed some flaws with Nintendo's approach towards Luigi's Mansion 2 HD. Now, fans have found an oddity within the game's files.

Nintendo first announced Luigi's Mansion 2 HD in June of last year, confirming that Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon would finally be coming to the Switch. The remake released to respectable reviews, with critics praising the game as a solid modernization of the 3DS Luigi's Mansion game featuring enhanced graphics and textures. Luigi's Mansion 2 HD notably did not feature any major new additions to the game, with no new enemies or bosses added with the Switch version. However, fans are noticing one unexpected callback to the 3DS version in the game's files.

The folders for the Switch version also mysteriously feature a "StreetPass" folder, suggesting the Switch game's files may have once contained the settings for the 3DS function. The new version saw some new folders added, including "guide," "movies," and "rumble" folders.

The inclusion of the StreetPass folder in Luigi's Mansion 2 HD seemingly suggests that the game is simply an upscaled version of the 3DS game. Nintendo confirmed earlier this week that developer Tantalus Media was in charge of the Luigi's Mansion remaster, having previously worked on HD versions of Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword. The secrecy surrounding Tantalus Media's involvement is not abnormal for Nintendo, with the studio regularly keeping information about its developers close to the chest.

Luigi's Mansion 2 HD launched amidst a resurgence for plenty of Nintendo's Mario spinoffs throughout recent months. The studio also confirmed the Mario & Luigi series is making a comeback, announcing Mario & Luigi: Brothership during June's Nintendo Direct. The Mario franchise has already welcomed back plenty of spinoffs throughout 2024 and looks set to continue the trend.
