Disney and Pixar's new film Luca is all set to release this summer and is being celebrated today with its latest trailer drop. The two-minute trailer reintroduces fans to Luca and Alberto, two young sea monsters who decide to venture into the world of humans for the first time. As they leave the ocean, the amphibians are able to transform into humans but have to keep their identity a secret as the people around them might not be accepting of their true form.

As Luca and Alberto hide their secret identity, they go on a journey around the Italian Riviera, offering viewers an insight into young life in Italy as they try gelato and learn to ride a bike. During their escapades, they run into Giulia, who is all about the “underdogs” sticking together. While eating a meal with her and her father, the boys are almost caught by Giulia's suspicious cat. It seems like keeping their secret will not be that simple.

In true Pixar style, the Luca trailer tackles a serious issue in a lighthearted manner. The focus is on the need for inclusion in society. The humans are clearly not welcoming anyone who is even slightly different, a sort of commentary on the social-political climate around the world. What comes out looking strong is the bond between the two main protagonists, as they stick together through all the madness.

Along with the trailer, Disney also revealed the official poster for the Enrico Casarosa-directed film. Casarosa, who was previously nominated for an Oscar for his animated short film La Luna, revealed in past interviews that Luca has been inspired by his own bond with his best friend, who is also named Alberto. He confessed to being “shy and timid” as a young child, but Alberto helped him step out of that shell while getting into some trouble. It would be interesting to see the two friends' coming-of-age story come to life, as it could also be something that many viewers can relate to.

Disney and Pixar's Luca stars Jacob Tremblay as Luca, Jack Dylan Grazer as Alberto, and Emma Berman as Giulia. The cast will also include Maya Rudolph as Luca’s mother Daniela, Marco Barricelli as Giulia’s father Massimo, and Jim Gaffigan as Luca’s dad Lorenzo. While the film was originally meant for a theatrical release, Luca will now be arriving on Disney Plus in June. The film is coming off hot after Pixar’s Oscar win for the Jamie Foxx-led Soul in the Best Animated Feature category.

Luca will premiere on Disney Plus on June 18, 2021.
