The Rings of Power are some of the most important artifacts from the Lord of the Rings series. The famous poem from Tolkien's work explains how many of the Rings were made, as well as which nations and races were in possession of them. The Dwarves got seven, Men got nine, and so on and so forth. There were 20 Rings in total, and Sauron had a hand in the creation of all of them, as they were an effort to turn all of the most important leaders in Middle-earth to his side of evil. The general idea was that he would have a Master Ring (aka the One Ring) that would control all of the others, and he would have the land within his grasp.

The most important of all of these (except for the One Ring, of course) might be the Rings gifted to the Elves, as Sauron was particularly interested in ruling over the Elves, since he was at war with them and any other effort to defeat them would have required an army bigger than what he had access to. Celebrimbor forged the three Elven Rings, named Nenya, Narya, and Vilya, guided by Sauron's persuasion. Sauron (in disguise) told him that by forging these Rings, the Elves would be given new powers and would be able to transform Middle-earth. But what happened after the Rings were forged? Who was in possession of these powerful artifacts, and what did they do with them?

Nenya is Worn by Galadriel

Nenya went by a few different names, including The White Ring, the Ring of Adamant, and Ring of Water. The name Nenya is derived from the word "nén" in the Quenya dialect of Elvish, which means "water". It was made of mithril and set with a white stone of adamant. All of the Elven rings had specific powers, and their existence was hidden from Sauron so that no evil could touch them. Nenya's power was preservation and concealment from evil. Galadriel, who was in possession of Nenya, used these powers to create Lothlórien and sustain it as a safe haven.

After the One Ring was destroyed and Sauron was defeated, Nenya lost its power, along with the other two Elven Rings. Galadriel wore Nenya on the ship that departed to the West from the Grey Havens, and the other two Rings and their bearers went with her. With the Ring gone from Middle-earth, the beauty of Lothlórien began to fade, and the inhabitants left gradually. After the year 121 of the Fourth Age, the whole place had been deserted. Nenya appeared in the Lord of the Rings movies as well as the Rings of Power series, as the three Elven Rings were forged by Celebrimbor in the final episode of the first season. Nenya looks different in Peter Jackon's movies, as the design is more flower-shaped.

Narya Was Worn by Círdan and Gandalf

Narya was the Ring of Fire, and the name came from the Quenya word "narwa", which means "fiery red". It had the power to inspire others to resist tyranny and domination, as well as to hide the owner from remote observation. It was also said to have fire powers, as Gandalf wielded the Flame of Arnor during Durin's Bane. After the Rings were forged, Celebrimbor gave Narya to Gil-galad, the High King of the Ñoldor Elves. He, in turn, entrusted the Ring to his lieutenant Círdan.

When Gandalf arrived in Middle-earth in the Third Age, Círdan gave him Narya because he knew Gandalf's true identity and purpose. Only he, Galadriel, and Elrond knew that Gandalf had this Ring, and he carried it with him through his entire journey. It's unclear exactly when he used it, but during the battle of Minas Tirith, he inspired hope and courage in all that he passed, which might have been due to Narya's influence. He took it with him to the Grey Havens, and into the West, just like Galadriel.

Vilya Was Worn By Gil-Galad and Elrond

Vilya, also called the Ring of Sapphire, the Blue Ring, and the Ring of Air, is the last of the three Elven Rings, and was considered to be the mightiest of all of them. The exact powers that it possessed were not specified, but it was thought to have the ability to heal and preserve. It also might have been able to control elements, as Elrond was able to summon a huge wave of water when the Nazgûl tried to cross the Bruinen. It would make sense that this Ring was considered the mightiest if it had the ability to control elements in that way. Vilya, like Narya, was also originally sent to Gil-galad, who then entrusted it to Elrond. Just like the other two Rings, Elrond held onto it until he passed into the West, and its powers began to fade after the destruction of the One Ring.
