Bilbo Baggins is one of the most avid travelers that The Shire has ever seen. In fact, he is renowned for it, and it has caused him a lot of trouble, with the other hobbits, who are usually quiet and unassuming by nature, labeling him as ‘odd’ ‘troublesome’ and a ‘disturber of the peace.’ By the time he has reached his 111th birthday, after many long years spent in his home in Bag End, Bilbo begins to grow restless once more, telling his old friend Gandalf “I wish to see mountains again!”However, there comes a time in every adventurer's life when they have to slow down a little, and admit that their journeying days are over. And for Bilbo, this happens surprisingly quickly, as age suddenly catches up to him after giving the ring of power to his heir Frodo. When the four hobbits who set out from the Shire 17 years after Bilbo, finally reaching Rivendell, they find the old hobbit looking much more frail and aged than when they last saw him.RELATED: Why Did Elrond Try To Make Arwen Leave Middle Earth? And when Bilbo and Frodo are awarded the rare and amazing honor of going to the Undying Lands of Valinor at the end of the third film, Bilbo states “I think I’m quite ready for another adventure.” So does this mean that he never got to take that last trip that he planned, never got to see the mountains of his younger days as he so desperately desired, and only ended up making it as far as Rivendell? Fans will be pleased to know that this is not the case. Bilbo did in fact make it as far as the Lonely Mountain, back to visit his friends who still live in Erebor after their quest to reclaim their homeland 60 years earlier was successful and they managed to rid the golden halls of Smaug the dragon.Mountains Gandalf, Mountains!Frodo and Sam learn this when they are reunited with Bilbo before the council of Elrond, and Bilbo tells them how “When he had left Hobbiton he had wandered off aimlessly, along the road or in the country on either side; but somehow he had steered all the time towards Rivendell. "I got here without much adventure," he said, "and after a rest I went on with the dwarves to Dale: my last journey. I shan't travel again.”This is, in some ways, sad for the old hobbit, because he had such a Tookish spirit, and probably had many more expeditions planned, but his body finally succumbed to the many long years that he had had the ring in his possession. Tolkien confirms later on in the book that Bilbo had been intending to at least go to Aragorn’s coronation, after the heir of Numenor proved himself worthy, and his wedding to Arwen, but that he had suddenly found himself too tired to make the journey, and had instead stayed in Rivendell to finish the rest of his book.Instead, he tells Frodo and Sam that they must take up the travel mantle, and come back and tell him all about their own journey, so that he can include it in his story. This they do, traveling through several kingdoms of Middle Earth before making their way eventually back to Rivendell, and then home to The Shire. It does take Bilbo years and years of living back in Bag End before he is able to muster the desire to go on another adventure, especially after the loss of Thorin, Fili, and Kili in the Battle of the Five Armies, and Frodo never quite gets there. The trauma of his own adventure, his stab at Weathertop, his intense battles with the once-friendly Gollum, and ultimately his giving into the desire of the ring and refusing to destroy it right at the last moment, leave a lasting impact on the hobbit, and he returns home cold and broken, making the decision to leave this world of painful memories shortly after.Bilbo quite ready for another adventureAlthough Samwise had better survival skills than most of the others, he wasn’t a true traveler at heart, and he did a brave and loyal thing in supporting and protecting Frodo all the way to Mount Doom, but he was quite content to return home and marry Rosie Cotton, have a plethora of children, and then join Frodo in the Undying Lands when his time came.So in the end, they all got what they wanted, and what they had earned through their sheer bravery and resilience: Bilbo got to see the mountains again, Frodo got to leave Middle Earth and be at peace, and Samwise go to be with the two people he loved most in the world, first of all Rosie, and then Frodo until the end of their days.MORE: Why Are Fire-Benders the Only Ones In The Last Airbender Who Can Create Their Own Element?
