The world of Middle-earth is so expansive and the characters feel so multi-faceted and complex that sometimes it's just as interesting to learn about what happened to them after the events of The Lord of the Rings as it is to hear about their adventures during the main story itself. Tolkien expanded the stories of many of the characters past the ending of LOTR, and it's interesting to read his expanded writings and learn the fates of these characters that the audience has grown to care about over the course of their many adventures.

One pair of characters that Tolkien follows to the end is Aragorn and Arwen. Aragorn goes on a journey of taking up the responsibility of the throne of Gondor and is ostensibly one of the heroes of the story, but his love story with Arwen is just as central. They have a bit of a star-crossed love at first, being from two different worlds and with very different lifespans, which makes their ending where they choose to be together and are finally able to settle with each other all the more satisfying. But what happened to them after the part of their story that takes place during The Lord of the Rings?

What Happened To Arwen and Aragorn After Lord of the Rings?

After the end of the main story and the fall of Sauron, Aragorn led a charge against the remaining Orcs in Middle-earth. He led an army against them and essentially wiped them out, and he also freed the people of Núrn who had been enslaved to Sauron. This finally allowed him to settle for a moment, and his coronation took place, crowning him King of Gondor. He and Arwen also married, of course, finally together after the trials and tribulations of the earlier part of their romance. However, it still wasn't a totally happy ending for Middle-earth, at least, not yet.

The land had been totally ravaged by war, and Aragorn and Arwen worked as king and queen to help restore it to its former glory. Aragorn's reign over Gondor actually brought about a period of prosperity, as he initiated a lot of post-war rebuilding campaigns. He worked to foster better communication between the peoples of Middle-earth, and created a much better relationship between Men, Dwarves, and Elves. He and Arwen worked to bring Gondor, and Middle-earth as a whole, back to the way it was before Sauron's rule, if not better. The land had been through war for so long that creating peace was really a top priority for everyone.

How Many Children Did Arwen And Aragorn Have?

Arwen and Aragorn had one son, only a year after the defeat of Sauron. Their son's name was Eldarion, and he was the heir to the throne of Gondor as he was their only male child. As the son of an Elf and a Man (who was a descendant of the long-lived Dúnedain), Eldarion had a long youth much like an Elf, having the appearance of a 20-year-old until he was nearly 60. Eldarion's name was Quenya, one of the Elven languages, and meant "Son of the Eldar", which is fitting for the long lineage of powerful Elves he came from. Eldarion eventually took on the throne of Gondor after his father's death, and ruled for about a hundred years.

He wasn't the only child of Arwen and Aragorn, however. The couple also had an unspecified number of daughters, all of whom remain unnamed. It seems that Eldarion was the only child with a significant enough role in Middle-earth's history for Tolkien to mention by name. Arwen saw a vision of her and Aragorn's future child before they got together for good, and it seems that her vision came true, as Eldarion was that very child that she saw in her mind.

How Old Were Arwen and Aragorn When They Died?

Arwen and Aragorn were together for 121 years, both of them having long lifespans due to their heritage. In the year 120 of the Fourth Age, Aragorn realized his life was coming to an end, and so he left the throne to Eldarion and went to his final resting place in the House of the Kings in the Silent Street of Minas Tirith. He was 210 years old. Arwen followed him to the afterlife shortly thereafter, as she journeyed to Lothlórien and, just one year after Aragorn's death, she died of a broken heart at the age of 2,901. Their connection was strong until the very end, as they even left the world together.
