Highlights

  • Hexworks has disabled crossplay in Lords of the Fallen following player feedback, but Co-op & PvP multiplayer modes are still available on individual platforms.
  • While some updates have been well-received, such as increased difficulty, other updates, like disabling crossplay, are disappointing.
  • Though no official reason was shared for crossplay's removal, fans believe it was the cause of performance issues that the developer is actively working to address.

The developers at Hexworks have disabled crossplay within Lords of the Fallen just days after it was released across PC and consoles. Since the follow-up to the 2014 game was released on October 13, The Lords of the Fallen has already seen numerous patches and hotfixes rolled out to gamers.

One of the more surprising updates is the difficulty level for two bosses has been increased in Lords of the Fallen. The game has already drawn comparisons with other Soulslike titles like Elden Ring and Dark Souls, and it seems Hexworks is looking to ensure players are challenged throughout their playthrough. Not all updates have had a positive outcome, however, with the developers having to deactivate the crossplay feature while a fix is found.

Lords of the Fallen features a diverse catalog of starting class builds that is emboldened further if players purchase the deluxe edition.

Posting on Twitter, Hexworks confirmed that it has temporarily disabled crossplay functionality in Lords of the Fallen following player feedback. Hexworks haven’t mentioned the specific issues that led to this decision, but the studio is actively monitoring both Twitter and Reddit to address as many concerns from gamers as possible. The message reaffirms that both the Co-op & PvP multiplayer modes are still available for players, but are restricted to their own platforms while investigations take place.

While there is no official explanation from Hexworks as to why cross-platform play has been disabled, player feedback seems to suggest that the multiplayer modes have caused the game’s performance to grind to a halt. To investigate the issues within Lords of the Fallen, the developer has turned to Redpoint & Epic to help solve the problem.

The news might be a blow to players looking to jump into the latest entry in the Soulslike genre with friends on other consoles, but players are applauding the transparent approach from the developers. The replies to the post are generally supportive, especially considering the speed in which issues are being highlighted. Of course, with an ambitious game such as Lords of the Fallen, there are other issues that will persist for some time, such as the graphical performance on the Xbox version.

Hexworks acknowledges there is still work to be done on its latest game and is busy working to ensure the title meets player expectations. As crossplay is out of the question for the time being, players can still make use of the expansive single-player experience. Gamers can expect to spend around 25-30 hours in Lords of the Fallen’s world of Mournstead, and that’s not including any additional bonuses found within post-game content.

Lords of the Fallen is now available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
