The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was set to launch on September 1, a mere day prior to the premiere of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power TV series on Amazon Prime Video. This seemed like the perfect release date for the game, as it would be able to capitalize on the hype of the TV series, but its release date has now been pushed back. And unfortunately for Lord of the Rings fans who were looking to playing the game soon, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum does not have a new release date at the time of this writing.

The official Lord of the Rings: Gollum social media accounts made the announcement, thanking fans for their patience and support. The post said that the team wants to meet the community's expectations in a way that "honors the vision of J.R.R. Tolkien," and so to "deliver the best possible experience," the decision has been made to delay the Lord of the Rings: Gollum release date "by a few months." The team promises that a specific release date will be announced "in the near future," though it's unclear exactly when that announcement will come to pass.

It will be interesting to see what this means for the Lord of the Rings: Gollum Switch port. While the PC, PlayStation, and Xbox versions of the game were all scheduled to launch on September 1, the Switch version wasn't going to come until November 30. It's possible that this release date delay will see the Switch version of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum release on the same day as the other versions, but it's also possible that Switch fans will have to wait even longer to play the game. Fans will just have to wait for clarification on that front to be sure either way.

It will also be interesting to see if the Lord of the Rings: Gollum release date is still in 2022 or if the game will ultimately be pushed back to 2023. "Few months" is a vague window, and so it wouldn't be surprising to see the game launch early next year instead. Again, fans will just have to stand by for clarification, and hopefully some more information on the game's new release plans comes sooner rather than later.

Some may not be surprised that The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is being delayed. Lord of the Rings: Gollum gameplay videos have not been all that well-received by fans, and so it's possible that feedback is why the decision was made to ultimately push it back. Time will tell how it shapes up.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
