The Lord of the Rings is an epic tale about the journey to destroy an evil ring in the fires of Mount Doom. Written by acclaimed author J.R.R. Tolkien, it's a story about the failures of man and how the smallest among us might be the biggest heroes. It starts with a fellowship of nine on a quest to destroy the ring, but only two make it to Mount Doom: Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee.

Frodo is the one tasked with destroying the ring in The Lord of the Rings. He inherited it from his Uncle Bilbo Baggins. Along the way, he delivered some quotes that stand out for fans of the franchise.

10 "I Wish The Ring Had Never Come To Me"

Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins

Frodo delivers this line to Gandalf during the events of The Fellowship of the Ring. Frodo has learned what the ring is and how it must be destroyed. He knows he has been given an almost impossible task that he'd rather not face.

Gandalf points out that every great moment in time is punctuated by the actions of a hero who wishes they didn't have to be a hero. Frodo is on an epic mission that he doesn't want to be on, but he has to be.

9 "I Am Wounded With Knife, Sting And Tooth. Where Shall I Find Rest?"

Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins

Frodo shows the wisdom of his journey during a conversation with Gandalf during the events of Return of the King. Frodo was a simple hobbit when he left for this adventure, but while he may be a hero, he's coming back a broken hobbit.

Frodo notes how he might return to the Shire but almost no one there will understand what he's been through. Samwise Gamgee went on the entire journey with him, but Sam just wants to go back to the Shire. Frodo doesn't share that desire, and he isn't sure what will come of him.

8 "Maybe He Does Deserve To Die, But Now That I See Him, I Do Pity Him"

Elijah Wood as Frodo. Sean Astin as Sam. Andy Serkis as Gollum.

Frodo finally understands why Bilbo didn't kill Gollum during the events of The Hobbit. Frodo had always heard about Gollum, but hearing about someone and actually seeing them are completely different. When Frodo finally sees what the ring has done to Gollum, rather than kill him as he thought he would, Frodo spares him.

This becomes very important later on in the story when Gollum's actions lead to injury for Frodo but also the destruction of the ring. Gollum, in his most villainous and greedy, ends up accidentally saving everyone.

7 "It's Useless To Meet Revenge With Revenge: It Will Heal Nothing"

Elijah Wood as Frodo. Sean Astin as Sam.

This is another quote to show how Frodo has come full circle through the events of the story. Early on, Frodo would like revenge for wrongdoings, especially in The Shire. But, after going on the journey to destroy the ring, he knows that it will not help.

Those who have been the victims of revenge don't need to anger but solace. Getting revenge will not help them. As he says in The Return of the King, it will heal nothing.

6 "I Feel That As Long As The Shire Lies Behind, Safe And Comfortable, I Shall Find Wandering More Bearable"

Dominic Monaghan as Merry. Elijah Wood as Frodo. Billy Boyd as Pippin. Sean Astin as Sam.

Frodo shows compassion for his home as he embarks on his journey in The Fellowship of the Ring. Frodo knows that Gollum has unveiled the location of the One Ring to the Nazgûl. It's now up to him to get the ring out of The Shire to protect those that live there.

Frodo isn't exactly wanting to go on an adventure like his Uncle Bilbo. But he believes that if he knows his home is protected by his actions, it will make it easier for him to complete his quest.

5 "You're Late!"

Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins

The very first words spoken by Frodo to Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings. Frodo has been waiting on Gandalf to arrive to celebrate Bilbo Baggins' 111th birthday. It sets up one of Gandalf's best quotes.

As Gandalf lets Frodo know that a wizard is never late nor early, it sets up the clear cordial relationship between the pair that will become very important throughout Frodo's journey.

4 "Whatever You Did, You've Officially Been Labeled A Disturber Of The Peace"

Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins

Frodo continues his first interaction in the series with Gandalf by referencing the events of The Hobbit. Gandalf was integral in leading Bilbo to leave The Shire and go on his first adventure. Gandalf insists the only thing he did was give Bilbo a "push out the door."

Frodo lets Gandalf know that the rest of Hobbiton doesn't think too kindly of him. Bilbo was once well-respected but is now a bit eccentric and the hobbits blame Gandalf.

3 "Thirteen Months To The Day Since Gandalf Sent Us On Our Long Journey... We Found Ourselves Looking Upon A Familiar Sight"

Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins

Another of Frodo's full circle moments, he delivers this line in Return of the King, when he, Sam, Merry and Pippin return to Hobbiton after destroying the ring. It was the destination all four of them wanted when they left.

Sadly, for Frodo, it wouldn't be the final destination he wanted when he returned. He learned a lot about himself. Sometimes that's what people need. Some need to get out and leave to appreciate home. Others, like Frodo, need to get out and leave because home is no longer home to them.

2 "Bilbo's Story Was Now Over. There Would Be No More Journeys For Him... Save One"

Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins. Sean Astin as Samwise Gamgee.

Frodo delivers this in his voiceover at the end of Return of the King. Bilbo had been an adventurer, and he was going to join the elves and Gandalf as they left Rivendell. It would be the final journey of Bilbo's life, and it is perfectly described by his nephew.

This is part of an elaborate goodbye that Frodo is also taking part in. Frodo is ready to leave The Shire. Sam, Merry and Pippin are happy back in Hobbiton, but Frodo hasn't been the same since he left. He knows he'll never be happy there again. He's going to take Bilbo's last journey with him.

1 "I Will Take The Ring Though I Do Not Know The Way"

Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins

Frodo's bravest moment in the entire series is immortalized in this quote from The Fellowship of the Ring. As Frodo watches men, elves, dwarves and wizards argue over who will destroy the ring, Frodo recognizes no one is volunteering for the mission, and no one will.

The look on Gandalf's face when Frodo first proclaims he'll take the ring is one of the most anguished seen in the series. He believes Frodo can do it, but he doesn't want Frodo to have to do it. Once everyone sees this small Hobbit willing to sacrifice everything to destroy the ring, men, elves, dwarves and wizards join with him in the Fellowship. They may not have wanted the responsibility, but they are eager to assist him once he takes it on.
