Highlights

  • Loki's new role in the MCU involves managing the infinite branches of the multiverse, which could potentially give him more power and time-manipulating capabilities.
  • Sylvie's fate in the MCU is uncertain, but she may return to battle against Kang the Conqueror, potentially joining the Avengers team.
  • Sylvie could be a good replacement for Tony Stark in terms of gathering a team together, but convincing the Avengers to trust her and follow her lead would be a challenge.

The end of Loki season 2 revealed The God Mischief’s new role in the MCU. By becoming the living replacement for the Temporal Loom, Loki manages to foster the facilitation of an infinite multiverse. Unfortunately, this presumably will lead to the “brutal” multiverse war that He Who Remains was trying to prevent.

With Kang variants being hunted by the TVA as their own strategy to thwart a multiverse war, it would appear Sylvie is left to enjoy her immortal life on any timeline. Marvel’s plans for Sylvie appear to be up in the air with the end of Loki. Giving her the chance to write her own destiny could be a satisfactory resolution for her onscreen story. However, knowing her intense desire to keep He Who Remains from taking control of the TVA again, this may not be the last time Sylvie is seen in the MCU.

What Is Loki's New Role In The MCU?

Loki S2 Finale God of Stories

It’s difficult to ascertain the extent of Loki’s new role and his time-manipulating capabilities. Being confined, even if voluntarily, to managing the infinite branches of the multiverse could also be infusing Loki with more power. Time has been shown to be highly radioactive energy. In season 2's ending, Loki learned to master his time-slipping among other abilities. If Loki could learn to channel the timeline energy, he could potentially quasi-relieve himself of his new responsibilities by creating duplicates of himself.

Loki has effectively become the new He Who Remains of the MCU multiverse, taking his lonely throne at the End of Time. Replacing the old dictator who manipulated the fate of others, Loki seems to be the better alternative by simply allowing free will in the multiverse to run its course. How passive Loki will remain when his TVA friends, Sylvie, or the infinitely expanding state of the multiverse is threatened by Kang the Conqueror is yet to be seen. Finally obtaining the throne to rule over others and his fate of living alone and unloved is unchanged. Loki's redemption story finale seems to end by granting him both the power to rule and an eternal prison.

Will Sylvie Return To Defeat Kang?

Sylvie Sophia Di Martino Loki

Sylvie defeating He Who Remains in Loki season 1 was intentional on the part of He Who Remains. He deduced one of his reincarnations will ultimately find their way back to the destroyed Citadel at End of Time; thus, eventually restoring the sacred timeline. All that to say, a real battle between Sylvie and He Who Remains has not yet occurred. Her happy ending in Loki will likely be abruptly upended by the time Avengers: The Kang Dynasty hits theaters.

Loki is available to stream on Disney Plus

That’s also why Sylvie will probably return to join the Avengers’ battle. She may not be able to time-slip at will like Loki, but she has her own tempad to multiverse time-travel. Her mind control ability may also prove useful in possibly turning Kang variants against each other. Like a Thanos battle without Wanda after the death of Vision, a Kang battle without Sylvie just doesn’t seem appropriate anymore. If the villain Kang the Conqueror is seeking to reclaim his throne from Loki, he'll be head to the Citadel. There lies another opportunity for Loki and Sylvie to reunite onscreen. Kang encountering one or both Loki variants again may simply be a matter time.

Could Sylvie Lead The Avengers Against Kang?

Thor Meet Sylvie

In either scenario, Sylvie as the Loki-variant Avenger would be a great addition to the growing team. While Tom Hiddleston’s Loki is by no means necessarily out of the picture thanks to a multiverse of infinite variants, allowing Sylvie to take over the main role of Loki in the MCU could be the better path forward. There’s still a lot about this Loki variant that remains a mystery and her potential for mischief with her machete is enough to keep the Avengers on their toes as with the original Loki.

If Sylvie were to join the Avengers, she may be capable of helping Thor recover from his bout of depression and rescue everyone else from his absurdist comedy. Sophia Di Martino's portayal of Sylvie could just be getting started. Her time-travelling tech and need to keep Kang variants out of power may make her feel like a good replacement for Tony Stark, at least in terms of gathering a team together. Though a Sylvie-gathered team would likely be from across the multiverse rather than the usual suspects. She knows He Who Remains better than the current lot of Avengers therefore would be the most rational choice to lead in this capacity.

The dynamics for a dysfunctional Avengers team remain in place if Sylvie were to lead. The Loki most known to the Avengers was a supervillain who could never be trusted. They didn't get to see the Loki she knows and how even a supervillain can turn out to be a hero. Convincing them to trust her, and especially for Thor to fall in line under her command, would be an uphill battle. A trip to the TVA would be the easy fix. Nonetheless, with the state of the multiverse at stake, Sylvie is the only one who can track Kang variants across time and space. America Chavez, if she's mastered her powers, can traverse the multiverse but, she can't time-travel. For added measure, fans could also be treated to cameos from past heroes and villains due to Sylvie's time-travelling. Even a heroic variant of Ultron or Thanos isn't out of the question. In this hypothetical storyline, Sylvie gets the chance that Loki never had; and, the Avengers would have no choice but to trust Sylvie, the Loki who stops at nothing to fight for all time.
