As fans have seen in WandaVision and The Falconand the Winter Soldier, Marvel has been keeping their promise that the Disney Plus shows would have the same feel as the movies and will carry the same weight in terms of their impact. With the release of the latest MCU series, Loki, coming this week, it might prove to be even more important for the cinematic universe than the previous two shows.
When speaking with Empire, Marvel boss Kevin Feige teased the significant impact Loki would have. After describing it as being "tremendously important" he went on to say, "It perhaps will have more impact on the MCU than any of the shows thus far." Feige went on to talk about how the series will also see some big changes for the titular character. Much like with WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the protagonist of this story, Loki, will go through a transformation and end in an unexpected place.
There have been a lot of rumors surrounding the Loki series and how it might play into the larger MCU. Fans are particularly interested in the implications of Loki branching off in time from Avengers: Endgame and thus creating a reality in which he is still alive. Given the alternate reality element, there have also been endless rumors about which MCU characters might appear, or which new ones might be introduced.
The series will see Tom Hiddleston reprise his role of Loki, which he first played in 2011's Thor, and will follow the consequences of his time travel. The series will also star Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Sophia Di Martino. Michael Waldron will serve as the head writer while Kate Herron will direct each of the series' six episodes.
Given the fact that Loki died at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War, it's easy to look at this series as sort of a wrapping up of his character. However, it seems quite clear that Marvel has much grander plans for the show. Feige is obviously trying to sell the excitement of the show, but his comments are a pretty substantial tease that will surely have fans guessing. Some fans were disappointed by the lack of big reveals in the other shows, as was the case with WandaVision.
Feige could be setting expectations too high yet again, but it could be that Loki is ready to deliver some significant impact. It could be that the God of Mischief plays a role in opening the multiverse in the MCU. While many assumed this series would be the end of Loki's story, it could just be the beginning of a new chapter.
Loki will premiere on June 9, 2021, on Disney Plus.
