An enhanced edition of the original Little Nightmares game might be announced soon, as the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has rated the title. The listing says very little about the enhanced version's improvements to Little Nightmares, initially released in 2017, though the current ESRB rating provides some details on the game's narrative.

News about an enhanced version of Little Nightmares began circulating in 2023 when the South Africa Film and Publication Board leaked the title. Since then, updates on the game have been relatively quiet. Publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment, however, has been working toward the third installment of the series along with developer Supermassive Games. The developer also worked on Little Nightmares 2: Enhanced Edition, released in 2021. While Little Nightmares 3 aims for a 2024 release, the original game might be a part of Bandai Namco Entertainment's publishing launch schedule for the new year.

Little Nightmares 3 Co-Op Could Be What Takes the Series to the Next Level

Game ZXC is given an extended look at Little Nightmares 3, the newly-announced co-op horror game in development at Supermassive Games.

As reported by outlets like Gematsu, fans of the Little Nightmares games may anticipate some improvements in 2024, as the ESRB lists Little Nightmares: Enhanced Edition for current-generation platforms. These include PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The rating merely provides the platforms for the game, complete with a description of what to expect. "This is an adventure platformer in which players assume the role of a girl (Six) who must escape a nightmarish world," the description reads. It adds a few detailed sequences that may be disturbing for some gamers, including depictions of death and scenes of blood while playing as Six, the protagonist of Little Nightmares. It is worth noting that the ESRB listing cannot be reached at the time of writing.

Little Nightmares

Details are scarce regarding gameplay improvements and changes to expect in Little Nightmares: Enhanced Edition. For reference, players can look at Little Nightmares 2 and its next-generation enhancements when the updated version was released for current-generation platforms. These improvements came with two modes: Performance mode to amplify the gameplay to 2160p and 60 fps and Quality mode for higher resolutions - other enhancements brought along immersive audio tweaks, ray-tracing capabilities, and more. These improvements could fall into the same line as Little Nightmares: Enhanced Edition, though only time will tell.

While an official announcement by Bandai Namco Entertainment and Supermassive Games hasn't been made yet, the ESRB listing gives the impression that some news about the title might be on the horizon. Little Nightmares 3 is scheduled for a 2024 release, and the enhanced version of the original 2017 game might be used to breathe new interest into the series. It'll allow new players to experience Little Nightmares with modern technology. At the same time, the third title could present a unique experience with two main playable characters (protagonists Alone and Low) and different gameplay mechanics.
