Little Nightmares 3 is set to shake up the series' formula when it arrives in 2024. The title transports fans to a brand new location, The Spiral, which developer Supermassive Games describes as an amalgamation of disjointed, disturbing locations. Traversing the Spiral will be Little Nightmares 3’s two new protagonists, Low and Alone, who must work together to escape the myriad horrors hidden within. While little has been officially shared about the protagonists, a closer look at each character’s appearance and unique skills reveals deeper connections to the series' lore. Little Nightmare 3's Low and Alone are unlike any other protagonist in the series' history, and each holds a deeper motive for exploring deeper into the Spiral.

Little Nightmares 3 was a surprise announcement at Gamescom 2023, where Supermassive Games released its first trailer. Granting fans a first glimpse at the Spiral and the title’s two protagonists, the developer set the stage for what looks to be an exciting and revealing entry in the horror-platformer series. Since the first title in the series, the Little Nightmares franchise has grown to include comics, books, mobile games, and mainline console games. To kick off its pre-release celebration, the series' first podcast, titled The Sound of Nightmares, was announced, revealing a canonical side story that seemingly connects to Little Nightmares 3, as one episode features a location from the title’s reveal trailer.

Little Nightmares 3 May Have New Protagonists, But One Threat is Likely Around The Corner

Little Nightmares 3 is set to feature two original protagonists, but one significant threat from the series' prior entries is likely bound to surface.

Low and Alone’s Appearances Offer Insight into Their Histories

Little Nightmares 3’s Low and Alone are shrouded in mystery, but fans have had ample time to infer some of their major traits through their appearances. Alone appears to be the female child who wears a yellow hazmat-like suit and workshop goggles. Described as a “tinkerer,” she wields a wrench, which she uses in both puzzle-solving and combat scenarios. Alone is the first of Little Nightmares' protagonists to wield a weapon, inferring a history of survival in navigating the horrors of the Spiral.

Little Nightmares 3’s Low appears to be small and scrawny, using various objects to tackle most tasks. He has been shown to wield a bow and arrow, becoming the series’ second armed protagonist, and also an umbrella made of Raven feathers.

In addition to these feathers, Low wears a raven-like mask, not unlike a plague doctor-type character, which many works of fiction associate with looming or inevitable death. Interestingly, Low’s mask and clothing feature a range of strange details, such as the mask having different-sized eyes, a glove and sleeve on only his left hand, and a beaded bracelet on his right ankle. However, Low differs from Alone in another way, as the former wields a unique, and potentially sinister, skill.

Little Nightmares 3’s Protagonists Are More Than Meets the Eye

Low and Alone are currently believed to be wholly original to Little Nightmares 3, but each features a unique attribute that has fans making connections to the series’ wider lore. Fans have been particularly focused on Alone’s hairstyle, as it shares overt similarities to a popular side character, “The Girl with Braids.” The character appears in various portraits throughout Little Nightmares 2's Pale City and, most significantly, is featured in her own short story in the Little Nightmares comic.

“The Girl with Braids” was last seen escaping her cell at The Hospital in the comic, but an unused character model can be found in the game files for Little Nightmares 2, hinting at a previously larger role. Alone is said to be fueled by a curiosity that sees her wish to trace the inner workings of the Spiral to their source.

Low is perhaps the most mysterious element in Little Nightmares 3, as the scrawny child wields the ability to travel between locations through mirrors. Fans may recall that Little Nightmares 2's Mono wielded a similar ability, which the character used to travel between televisions both before and after becoming the series' main antagonist, The Thin Man.

While this skill alone should be enough to give fans pause, Low is also described by developers as being obsessed with reaching a mythical and dangerous gateway, leading to his team-up with Alone. While Little Nightmares 3's protagonists boast unique appearances and hidden motives, much about them is still unknown. Fans of Little Nightmares 3 are hoping for an update at The Game Awards 2023, as it provides the final major stage headed into 2024.
