The Little Mermaid live-action remake is coming closer to its release day. Fans will soon see the incredibly talented Halle Bailey bring Ariel to life on the big screen. Now, Funko Pop figures give them a glimpse at Melissa McCarthy's Ursula.
Disney has been bringing nonstop content to fans and audiences worldwide thanks to their long list of acquisitions. Every year fans get a live-action Disney remake, multiple Star Wars projects, and Marvel Studios releases. Disney's content isn't limited to movies. They also host their own streaming service and produce video games for their beloved IPs. It’s hard keeping these projects secret, especially during the era of social media, but Disney has been known to do a relatively great job at guarding leaks. Of course, nobody is perfect.
Thanks to a photo of an upcoming line of Funko Pops (via DisTrackers), fans got their chance to see the design of the supporting cast of characters in The Little Mermaid remake. Fans already got their first look at Bailey's Ariel in The Little Mermaid trailer, but the Funko Pop image shows McCarthy's Ursula, the sea witch who takes Ariel's voice in exchange for making her human. The Funko Pops also showed the designs for Prince Eric, King Triton, and Ariel in human form, but it looks like those photos have been taken down.
If the toys are any indication, The Little Mermaid live-action remake will be one of the biggest hits this year, as they did a phenomenal job designing the look for every character, especially Bailey's Ariel. The one exciting aspect of the film that many are looking forward to is the various musical scenes. Ariel's gift in the original story was her voice, and since Halle Bailey is an incredibly gifted singer, many are excited to see her perform classic songs.
Because most of Ariel's friends are sea creatures and The Little Mermaid takes place underwater, fans shouldn't be surprised to see a lot of VFX, which is likely why the film hasn't revealed too much. Underwater scenes are tricky to create digitally and difficult when most involve sea creatures. However, if one studio can pull it off, it would be Disney. Even though Disney and Marvel Studios were heavily criticized last year due to the poor VFX reception, it looks like they are on the right track.
Marvel Studios announced they were taking action after the VFX backlash, which might be why fans saw their release slate drastically change. If that's any indication, hopefully, the same care will go into bringing the world of The Little Mermaid to life.
The Little Mermaid is slated for a May 26, 2023, theatrical release.
