Heart Pieces in The Legend of Zelda games have been a staple reward since the very first title, with each new Heart Container allowing Link to attempt more difficult battles with greater ease and destroy the evil Ganon once and for all. Or, at the very least, until he is inevitably resurrected in the next game.

While Link's Awakening steers clear of many common aspects of the Zelda series, such as the Master Sword, Ganon, and even Princess Zelda herself, it retains many of the same items found throughout Hyrule, including Heart Pieces. In the 2019 remake, however, Nintendo decided that 12 Heart Pieces wasn't nearly enough and added a whopping 21 more to the game.
