Hogwarts Legacy is a fairly simple plot. Players begin their Fifth Year at Hogwarts under the tutelage of Professor Fig. Everything seems like it is going to be normal until they attacked on the way to Hogwarts.

As if that isn't enough, there is an evil goblin alliance forming that wants this new child for some reason. There are answers to these questions and more in Hogwarts Legacy's story, but there are also a lot of questions left unanswered by the end.

6 What’s Your Backstory?

Getting sorted in Hogwarts Legacy

If players hope that their created character is going to get answers about their backstory then they should think again. The game begins with the player getting escorted into a carriage with Professor Fig and a member of the Ministry of Magic. Fig explains that this student is a Fifth Year and will be attending Hogwarts for the first time.

That is all of the backstory players will get throughout the whole game. Why were they accepted into Hogwarts as a Fifth Year? Were they a Muggle and discovered their powers late? What about their family? Do they have any out there or are they an orphan? There are so many questions; it seems completely wild that not a single one is answered in Hogwarts Legacy.

5 A Sequel And Your Return

Riding a Graphorn in Hogwarts Legacy

Will this game get a sequel? That’s on the minds of many fans who enjoyed this experience despite the controversy. Based on the pushback, it’s unclear if a sequel will get made. If one does, how will it proceed? Will it follow a new character or will it be about this same character going into their Sixth Year at Hogwarts?

If that is the case then some fans may be upset by that idea. How could a sequel improve that much if they use the same school and countryside? Those thoughts are valid, but some games reuse assets a lot between sequels like the Yakuza series and those games are beloved. Hogwarts Legacy could fast-forward in time and focus on this same character as an adult too to create something more different. Maybe they’ll just return as an NPC, but the overall point is there are many questions.

4 What Is Ancient Magic?

Fighting enemies in Hogwarts Legacy

Another question surrounding your character in the game is their power: Ancient Magic. Three magical people possess Ancient Magic in Hogwarts Legacy. The first is Professor Rackham who helped establish The Keepers organization to help protect and research this strange power. In their formation, they discovered that a young girl, Isidora, also possessed the gift.

She became corrupted by her greed for power, which often happens to villains in the Harry Potter universe. Then there is the new student aka players. How the player came into this power is unknown as is how any of the other users came into their powers. Were they the only three in history or have there been others out there too that a sequel could explore? Also, at its core, Ancient Magic is never fully explained. It’s kind of like the Force in Star Wars as some sort of cosmic energy.

3 Are The Keepers Still Around?

Isidora in Hogwarts Legacy

Professors Rackham, Fitzgerald, Rookwood, and Bakar were the four founding members of The Keepers. They were established to keep an eye on the power that they sealed below Hogwarts. They are dead now, but they exist as paintings to guide new Ancient Magic users to their fate through trials. After the game finishes, are these paintings still around?

Presumably, they should be as paintings are basically invincible in this universe. What about the student? Will they form a new union of The Keepers to protect this magic or will they go about it alone even though the other professors know about it? For that matter, who in Hogwarts knows about this Ancient Magic repository? Did anyone fill in the Ministry of Magic and could that be where the next game goes?

2 What Was Professor Fig Doing For Professor Black?

Professor Fig in Hogwarts Legacy

Professor Fig’s character is as mysterious as the background is for the main character. If players miss it, they may be wondering what he even teaches at Hogwarts. Notes and background information will explain that he is a professor of Magical Theory. What is Magical Theory? That’s another question right there, but there is a bigger one that is left on the table in Hogwarts Legacy.

What was Fig doing for Professor Black? He forces Fig away from his new student to report to the Ministry of Magic to explain what happened on their arrival. That seems to be the start of the reason why Black wants him to go, but there are hints Black has him go for other business as well. Was there a secret Fig was keeping from the player this whole time? Will Black explain things on behalf of Fig in a direct sequel, or is this just one plot line that is not important?

1 What Happened To The Dragon?

Ranrok in Hogwarts Legacy

There are two big dragon questions that players may be curious about in Hogwarts Legacy. One, what happened to that dragon that attacked the carriage at the beginning of the game? Was it a random dragon attack or was it connected to Ranrok? If it was connected to Ranrok then what happened to it?

Also, Ranrok himself turns into a dragon. Somehow, despite inhaling a mountain of energy, players can beat him easily. They, along with Fig, are also able to seal away the magic again. Fig is a powerful wizard to be sure but was he strong enough with the help of the new student to reconfigure Goblin Silver to contain this Ancient Magic? That seems like a bit of a far stretch that didn’t make a lot of sense.

Hogwarts Legacy was released on February 10, 2023 and is available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
