Among a plethora of incredible new game announcements, No Man's Sky creator and Hello Games founder Sean Murray took the stage at The Game Awards this year to give the world its first look at the studio's ambitious new title, Light No Fire. While fans of Hello Games have known for a while now that the small indie team behind No Man's Sky has been working on something new, it wasn't until yesterday's reveal trailer that fans first got to see the breathtaking new open world that the team has been building for the past five years.

From what's been said about the game so far, it's clear that Light No Fire takes its status as an open-world game very seriously. The infamously ill-fated hype that initially surrounded No Man's Sky, as well as the controversial launch that followed it, both taught Hello Games crucial lessons, and yet Murray was bold enough to name this new project "the first real open world" when revealing it. No Man's Sky's legendary comeback over the years has absolutely inspired confidence in Hello Games, and with Light No Fire allegedly an even more ambitious game than its predecessor, the bar certainly seems to be set pretty high.

Hello Games' newly announced title Light No Fire is even more ambitious than No Man's Sky, and it could end up cutting both ways.

Everything We Know About Light No Fire

All that's really known about Hello Games' upcoming title is the basics at this point, and while some of the finer details may not yet be available, No Man's Sky enthusiasts have already picked out a few points from the game's trailer that could potentially speak volumes. First things first, though, Light No Fire will be set on a life-sized, hugely diverse, procedurally generated fantasy Earth. Murray himself describes it as a world without boundaries where players can meet up and set out on adventures together, establishing the notion that the game will share the same sort of gameplay values that are seen in No Man's Sky. The game's trailer shows off some of the incredible environments and features that players can expect to see, including:

  • A boundless open-world environment
  • Underwater biomes and exploration
  • Scalable mountain ranges
  • Full multiplayer
  • Base building
  • Rideable dragons

It seems that a true sense of scale is a focal point for Light No Fire, with Murray emphasizing how the game will include a world "larger than Earth" complete with "real mountains - not video game mountains - that are miles high, taller than Everest". Variety is another vital part of the recipe, with the game's world said to harbor rich landscapes and continents which are separated by oceans that themselves are connected to rivers which run throughout the world. The trailer provides glimpses of various fantasy creatures that inhabit the lands, including dragons mounts for players. Multiplayer appears to be a crucial component of the game, and it seems that players will be able to work together to gather resources and build structures throughout the world as well, similarly to base building in No Man's Sky.

This doesn't mark the end for No Man's Sky either, with Murray teasing an upcoming update which will bring new space station designs.

One of the biggest complaints among No Man's Sky fans nowadays is the lack of variety across the game's nearly boundless universe. While it seems Light No Fire will feature just one planet, Hello Games has clearly focused on making it feel real, varied, and fully fleshed-out.

Perhaps one of the most interesting points of the trailer is the game's logo, which bears a striking resemblance to No Man's Sky's iconic logo. While this is entirely within the realm of fan speculation, some No Man's Sky lore enthusiasts theorize that the world of Light No Fire could somehow be shared or connected to the No Man's Sky universe, given some of the latter's lore details and the parallels seen between the two games.
