Highlights

  • Neowiz's upcoming Lies of P DLC will likely feature the same protagonist or a similar puppet creation in a new location, maintaining a connection to the base game's events.
  • The sequel may revolve around a Wizard of Oz adaptation, potentially exploring the Emerald City and Oz.
  • The wicked witches in this Wizard of Oz adaptation could draw inspiration from Bloodborne's Witches of Hemwick, although Neowiz may aim for more substantial boss fights that are less gimmicky than the ones in Bloodborne.

If Neowiz’s suggestions are to be taken for face value, it would seem as if Lies of P’s DLC will revolve around the same protagonist or at least an identical puppet creation in a new location, but still be intrinsically connected to the base game’s events somehow. That would mean Neowiz is rightfully planning to withhold its teased Wizard of Oz content for a sequel, which would likely abandon the Lies of P title for something centering around Dorothy’s character, even if it is still connected to the Lies of P universe.

Like how Neowiz completely reimagined The Adventures of Pinocchio for Lies of P, it’s anyone’s guess what a Wizard of Oz adaptation will look like. It’s possible that it could look similar with comparable themes and locations since Dorothy is literally seen near Hotel Krat in Lies of P’s post-credits tease, but it would make more sense for Neowiz’s adaptation to be set in or near the Emerald City if it is transitioning fully to that tale. Either way, it’ll be interesting to see what the design approach looks like, and Bloodborne could serve as inspiration once more when it comes to how the wicked witches are adapted.

Lies of P’s Wizard of Oz Could Channel Bloodborne’s Hemwick Charnel Lane

Lies of P’s Bloodborne Inspirations Should Extend to The Wizard of Oz

TheWizard of Oz’s wicked witches hail from different points of Oz, one in the West and one in the East, and that could give them stark distinctions in terms of how either is portrayed. Each could have its own biome with its own threats for Dorothy to contend with, but if Neowiz wants to lean toward a grisly take on TheWizard of Oz like it did with Lies of P it would be neat to see Bloodborne’s Hemwick Charnel Lane be an inspiration for at least one of the wicked witches’ whereabouts.

Hemwick Charnel Lane feeds into all the rich tropes of detestable, boil-infested witches fans could imagine, hiding its witches deep within the woods. This setting is not the most iconic or memorable when unique locations such as Cainhurst or the Nightmare Frontier can be explored, but it is still wonderful in its depiction.

Therefore, at least one wicked witch abode could feasibly be located within a similar wooded area if Neowiz wanted to take its adaptation in that direction. Neowiz has an opportunity to showcase these witches and Oz itself in an impressively dark and frightening manner, though The Wizard of Oz’s themes are already perfectly representative of such tones in its narrative.

Wizard of Oz’s Wicked Witches Could Echo Bloodborne’s Witches of Hemwick

Likewise, even though Bloodborne’s Witches of Hemwick may be its easiest bosses, Neowiz could take inspiration from how these witches behave and obscure themselves. It’s true that TheWizard of Oz’s wicked witches are far more iconic, though, and will certainly deserve full-fledged boss fights that aren’t as gimmicky as Bloodborne’s are.

In Bloodborne , these witches are optional and render themselves invisible until players can find them in a relatively cramped space and slap them around.

These witches conjure Mad Ones to try to thwart players, but unless there are enough of these enemies spawned and they’re overwhelmed, players will likely have no trouble beating the witches on the first attempt due to the simplicity of the encounter itself. It will be interesting to see how deeply Neowiz plans to dive into the lore of TheWizard of Oz’s witches to create a faithful adaptation or if it will be wholly creative in its approach, but Hemwick Charnel Lane, the Witches of Hemwick, and Bloodborne in general still serve as terrific templates for the future endeavors of Lies of P’s expanding fairy tale universe nonetheless.
