Highlights

  • Lies of P's DLC should aim to include a boss far superior to anything found in the base game, similar to Bloodborne's challenging Old Hunters expansion.
  • Neowiz has the opportunity to raise the bar with Lies of P's DLC combat, catering to both skilled players and newcomers to the Soulslike genre.
  • Just like Bloodborne's Old Hunters DLC, Lies of P should provide an aesthetically stunning and challenging experience with boss fights to test players' skills.

There's no doubt that Lies of P was one of the breakout Soulslike titles of 2023. Developer Neowiz was able to create a stunningly dark, challenging, and memorable game that found itself being endlessly compared with the likes of Bloodborne. If Neowiz does look to Bloodborne for further inspiration, Lies of P's DLC should take a leaf out of FromSoftware's book by including a boss far superior to anything found in the base game.

Nine years since its initial release, Bloodborne is still highly revered as one of the greatest games of its type. The game's difficulty is well documented, but this became even more of a talking point when Bloodborne's Old Hunters DLC was released eight months later. The Old Hunters manages to somehow make the base game seem almost like a walk in the park, with significantly more skill and patience needed to overcome some of its most imposing adversaries. It never becomes unfair, though, and every challenge can be overcome with the correct preparation and planning.

Lies of P's DLC Should Double Down on the Base Game's Challenge

Lies of P boss fights such as the King of Puppets and Simon Manus walked a fine line between challenging and unfair, sometimes veering towards the latter. To Neowiz's credit, it listened to player feedback on just how difficult these fights supposedly were, and several post-launch patches were released which nerfed some of the game's trickier encounters. Even after these patches, though, newcomers to the Soulslike genre will likely be caught off guard by the game's punishing combat.

Bloodborne's DLC is Incredibly Consistent in Its Challenge

Bloodborne's Old Hunters DLC is widely considered to be one of the best paid expansions ever made, such is its quality. Bosses like Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower, Ludwig the Accursed, and the infamous Orphan of Kos, are still talked about regularly in the Soulslike community when unfathomably arduous fights are regarded.

Each encounter is aesthetically stunning and provides players with a different kind of challenge to overcome. The Orphan of Kos is considered Bloodborne's toughest challenge and easily dwarfs anything found in the base game. Lies of P should aim for at least one fight of a similar magnitude when its DLC is eventually released.

Bloodborne The Old Hunters Boss List

When Lies of P is at its best, its combat is a stunning combination of clashing swords, swift counters, and precise deflections. Bosses including Laxasia the Complete provide ample opportunity for players to put their skills to the test, and they'll no doubt be looking forward to the potential challenges that come with Lies of P's DLC. Neowiz has the chance to take learnings from the base game into the DLC to ensure, just like Bloodborne, that any new DLC boss fights raise the bar when compared to the main game.
