Highlights

  • Traveller's Tales has been a prolific developer of family-friendly video games since 1989, and it's the developer's LEGO titles that have given it a legacy.
  • LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game was a great first step for the studio, with Indiana Jones, Batman, and Harry Potter following its release.
  • Despite facing some internal issues during the development of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, the game was well-received and sets the stage for future LEGO games by Traveller's Tales.

Founded in 1989, Traveller's Tales has been one of the most prolific developers when it comes to producing family-friendly video games. After a few successful games in the early 1990s, TT Games was given the opportunity to work alongside Disney, where it created a handful of beloved classic titles like Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue, and Toy Story Racer. But while TT Games would continue to work with Disney and a few other companies to produce a slew of movie tie-in games, it's TT Games' sprawling LEGO catalog that would earn the studio its legacy.

Beginning in 2005, Traveller's Tales was given the keys to both the LEGO and Star Wars licenses, and since then, the ball hasn't stopped rolling for the studio. Almost two whole decades and 23 LEGO titles later, TT Games is widely considered to be one of the best developers when it comes to creating family-friendly experiences, and its future is still looking bright.

As mentioned up top, Traveller's Tales' first LEGO project was the beloved LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game back in 2005. Collecting all three prequel movies, adding in some family-friendly humor, and bringing a ton of collectibles to the table, that first LEGO Star Wars game is a little rough around the edges now, but it essentially forged the formula that TT Games would go on to use in almost all of its LEGO titles ever since. Over the course of the next few years, TT Games would perfect this formula, with LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga being the pinnacle of TT Games' efforts, even long after its initial release.

Over the next few years, TT Games would continue to release at least one new LEGO game every year, quickly covering franchises like Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, and Batman. 2011 was an absolutely monumental year for TT Games, with a total of three LEGO games releasing all in the span of just eight months. What makes this even more impressive is that all three of these games are considered classics, with even the lowest-rated among them - LEGO Star Wars 3: The Clone Wars - receiving a fonder reception nowadays.

Though TT Games stuck to its usual LEGO formula throughout the first half of the 2010s, it would try something a bit new with 2015's LEGO Dimensions. Seeing the initial success of Disney Infinity and Skylanders, LEGO decided to jump on the toys-to-life bandwagon, releasing LEGO Dimensions, a title that allowed real-world LEGO sets and minifigures to be used in-game. Though LEGO Dimensions had a bit of a mixed reception both critically and commercially, it didn't stop TT Games from experimenting later down the line, with 2017's LEGO Worlds being the developer's loose take on Minecraft.

There was quite a sizable gap between the LEGO Movie 2 game and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, and unfortunately, the developer suffered some serious internal issues. Along with absurd amounts of crunch, TT Games' new engine wasn't working quite as well as intended, leading LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga to have a longer development period than any previous LEGO title. While crunch is never a good thing, The Skywalker Saga was a very good game, and it provides a great jumping off point for any future Traveller's Tales LEGO games on the horizon.
