The licensed LEGO video game series holds a special place in the hearts of many gamers across the world. Taking a beloved franchise and giving it a child-friendly, joke-filled makeover, the LEGO games act not only as fun little adaptations of fans' favorite franchises, but also as some people's very first introduction to the respective series. Whether it's adult fans or some kids that pick up LEGO Lord of the Rings, LEGO Jurassic World, or any other licensed LEGO game without actually ever having watched the movies they're based on, they might not get all the movies' nuances, but they will get a basic overview of the series' central story. The most recent entry, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, does a pretty great job at this.

Covering all nine mainline Star Wars movies, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga could technically give newcomers to the franchise a good introduction to the series' overarching story, all of its main characters, and the vast majority of its settings. And with Lucasfilm getting ready to take fans to brand-new corners of the canon Star Wars universe, the next LEGO Star Wars game has the perfect opportunity to prime fans for those adventures.

About a month ago, Lucasfilm and Disney held their annual fan convention, Star Wars Celebration, in London. During the convention, Lucasfilm announced a slew of new movie and TV projects and gave fans a better insight into those already confirmed last year. Along with a new trailer for Star Wars: The Bad Batch and Ahsoka, fans received confirmation of three brand-new movie projects, all centering around different periods on the Star Wars timeline.

Dave Filoni, the beloved director behind Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Rebels, and some of The Mandalorian is set to direct a new Star Wars film designed to wrap up the "Mandoverse," bringing together characters from across The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and the upcoming Ahsoka show for one climactic cinematic outing. Then there's James Mangold's Star Wars movie, set thousands of years in the past, telling the story of the very first Jedi and the dawning of the Force. And finally, a continuation of the Skywalker Saga was announced, with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy directing a movie focusing on Rey training a new generation of Jedi, set 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.

For the most part, these newly announced movies are focusing on periods of the Star Wars timeline that fans haven't seen yet, at least not in the canon universe. While these movies are sure to include plenty of direct and subtle references to the time period they're set in, it might be nice for fans to receive some kind of introduction to these brand new, unseen time settings before the movies actually release, and a LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga successor could be exactly the type of place to deliver that.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga offers a pretty good introduction for newcomers to the franchise, and one area in particular that it excels in is its settings, boasting over 20 open-world planets to explore. By physically exploring these iconic settings for themselves, fans are likely to feel even more connected to these locations than simply watching them on-screen. The next LEGO Star Wars game has the perfect opportunity to deliver a similar experience for all fans, with the game introducing everyone to these new Star Wars time periods for the first time as a way to prepare them for the upcoming slate of Star Wars movies.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
