Highlights

  • Traveller's Tales recently released LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, an open-world adaptation of all nine Star Wars films, which impressed fans with its gameplay and scope.
  • There are rumors that Traveller's Tales and Warner Bros. Games could be working on another LEGO game adaptation, potentially a Harry Potter open-world collection.
  • The LEGO Marvel games have untapped potential and could benefit from the same treatment as The Skywalker Saga, covering more of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and incorporating original stories.

At the moment, the LEGO game adaptations are thriving. Traveller's Tales, the main development studio under TT Games, is fresh off of returning to its first LEGO property with 2022’s LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Serving as a massive open-world adaptation of all nine Star Wars films, the game impressed fans with its fun gameplay and sheer scope. The Skywalker Saga only got larger with DLC characters, and while a rumored Mandalorian expansion never came to pass, Traveller’s Tales still gave the game some fitting sendoff updates in 2023.

With its accomplishments in The Skywalker Saga behind it, many fans are now wondering what's next for Traveller's Tales and its LEGO adaptations. As the British studio is owned by Warner Bros. Games, rumors have claimed that another Harry PotterLEGO game could be next. This could potentially mirror The Skywalker Saga as an open-world collection of all the numbered Harry Potter titles, which would once again make long-time LEGO and Harry Potter fans very happy. However, Traveller's Tales has worked with many IPs over its lifetime, and there is one in particular that would take to The Skywalker Saga’s format even more.

Certain LEGO Games Could Do With A Bigger Modern Sequel

Lego Marvel's Avengers

Plenty of small series exist within the licensed LEGO titles, most being made up of film properties that took multiple games to adapt. The LEGO Batman and DC line opted to tell original stories instead, but the LEGO Marvel games stand out by doing both. 2013's LEGO Marvel Super Heroes and 2017's LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 featured original stories even if they had some Marvel movie influence, while 2016’s LEGO Marvel's Avengers directly adapts The Avengers and Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, among other films.

LEGO Marvel's Avengers Has Lots Of Untapped Potential

It's interesting to look back on the LEGO Marvel games now, as all three represented Marvel’s massive cast well, but only touched on six Marvel Cinematic Universe films. While LEGO Marvel's Avengers primarily adapted the first two Avengers movies, it also devoted single levels to Marvel's Captain America: The First Avenger, Marvel's Iron Man 3,Marvel's Thor: The Dark World, and Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. That's barely anything in the grand scheme of the MCU's first three Phases, so it isn't hard to imagine Traveller's Tales giving Marvel's Avengers the Skywalker Saga treatment.

TT Games Should Tackle Marvel’s Avengers With The Skywalker Saga’s Scope

A hypothetical LEGO Marvel Cinematic Universe, or LEGO Marvel's Avengers: The Infinity Saga, could easily cover the first three Phases of the MCU. The game would adapt Phases like The Skywalker Saga covered Star Wars’ three film trilogies, even if it may need to cut many more scenes than The Skywalker Saga did. Most films could be compressed down to one level, like how LEGO Marvel's Avengers handled them, and choice installments could be filed down even smaller than that. These lesser films, as well as various Marvel TV shows, could be represented by side quests in an open world comparable to The Skywalker Saga's own.

How A Second LEGO Marvel's Avengers Can Match The Skywalker Saga

It would be tricky to design an MCU open world, as several films trot the globe and others take place in outer space. Traveller's Tales would need to choose its hub maps carefully, though its LEGO game history proves it's capable of the task. Once players are done reliving the MCU’s first three Phases, they could even unlock an alternate universe hub map hosting the many miscellaneous characters from later Phases, TV shows, and even un-adapted Marvel comics. Marvel’s own LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga would be the celebration of The Infinity Saga such a massive project deserves, so hopefully, Traveller's Tales will tackle it eventually.
