For almost two decades now, LEGO's vast array of licensed video games has kept both kids and adults happy, taking some of the most beloved franchises on the planet and boiling them down into little bite-sized puzzle-platformer campaigns. They often come with tons of collectibles packed inside to keep players coming back long after they've rolled credits. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is the latest in this long, long lineage, but it might just be the best.

Taking five years to develop, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is truly a labor of love from studio Traveller's Tales, and it's by far the most ambitious LEGO video game ever made. With more playable characters than ever before, more collectibles, more missions, and more open-world hubs, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga impressed audiences greatly with its scale upon its April 5, 2022 release. However, one year later, it's hard to shake the feeling that TT Games has still only just scratched the surface of what LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga could offer.

Before its release, TT Games focused LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga's marketing around the sheer scale of the game. Boasting over 300 playable characters, over 1000 collectibles, a ton of iconic starships, and over 20 open-world hub planets to explore, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is still one of the most impressive Star Wars games ever made, and that's without even taking into consideration the game's campaign which consists of all nine mainline Star Wars movies.

For Star Wars fans, both big and small, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga felt like a dream come true, and it was clear that TT Games had just as much adoration for the franchise as the rest of the fanbase, with hordes of easter eggs and references around literally every corner. There's really no understating just how impressive The Skywalker Saga's scale was, and still is, and it only makes sense that TT Games would want to use this groundwork for future large-scale LEGO titles, albeit without the use of the infamously troubling in-house NTT engine.

According to a recent report, a slew of licensed LEGO projects in the works at TT Games have been scrapped, with the only project surviving the cull being a LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga-inspired LEGO Harry Potter game. With Hogwarts Legacy being such a monumental hit, even despite its controversies, it makes sense that TT Games would shift focus to creating an expansive LEGO Harry Potter title, striking while the iron is hot. And it makes complete sense that The Skywalker Saga is laying the foundations.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga Still Has So Much More Potential

But before TT Games moves on to a LEGO Harry Potter game, it should seriously consider doing more with LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Before release, fan speculation surrounding The Skywalker Saga got pretty wild, with some fans claiming that it would also cover the entirety of The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, and the two spinoff movies Rogue One and Solo. While expecting all of this to be in the already content-rich Skywalker Saga at launch was pretty absurd, the idea of adding these spinoffs as post-launch DLC wasn't.

Star Wars is a vast franchise, with near-countless canonical and expanded universe spinoffs hailing from movies, TV shows, books, comics, and games. And while LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga already covered nine hefty entries, there are some big areas of the franchise that it doesn't cover, all of which would have made for perfect bite-sized DLC expansions. With a small 6-mission campaign based on Rogue One or Solo, or a meatier DLC covering the events of The Clone Wars, the opportunities are still right there for the taking. But it seems like TT Games' gaze has moved on to a new project, and now, one year later, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga still doesn't quite live up to its fullest potential.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
