Highlights

  • LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga sets a high standard for future licensed LEGO games with its abundance of content and high level of passion for the source material.
  • The game goes above and beyond with missions based on all nine Star Wars movies, around 80 hours of side content, and countless Easter eggs and references.
  • A LEGO Harry Potter game similar to The Skywalker Saga makes sense considering the franchise's success, but it will be a tough job to top the ambitious and impressive LEGO Star Wars game.

Licensed LEGO games have been a constant in the gaming world for almost two whole decades now, with the original LEGO Star Wars being the first proper licensed release from the company, aside from a barebones Harry Potter-themed LEGO Creator game in 2001. Since then, LEGO has covered a ton of different licenses in the video game world, ranging from Indiana Jones to Lord of the Rings to Jurassic Park, and a bunch in between, but by far the most ambitious licensed LEGO game has been TT Games' most recent, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.

Released in April of last year, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga may not have won any Game of the Year awards, but it lived up to its promise well. It may not be the most technically impressive Star Wars game ever made, nor the most mechanically rich, but LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is an unashamed celebration of the Star Wars franchise, and it's set quite the high bar for whatever licensed LEGO game is set to follow.

It'll Be Difficult For the Next LEGO Game To Top LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

While licensed LEGO games had continued to evolve steadily over the last decade and a bit, they hit a definite point of stagnation around the time of LEGO Jurassic World's release back in 2015. From then on, the licensed LEGO offerings never had a bad reception, but they weren't particularly unique or impressive either. Enter LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, a game that collects all nine mainline Star Wars movies, is running on a brand-new engine, and is the most ambitious project TT Games has ever tackled.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga went above and beyond in just about every way imaginable. On top of missions based on all nine Star Wars movies, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga also offered around 80 hours of side content, ranging from hunting down hundreds of collectibles, to completing various side quests, to participating in unique minigames. Nothing was overly complex, but the sheer amount of content in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was incredibly impressive, especially for a licensed LEGO title.

It wasn't just LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga's abundance of content that left a lasting impression, but also the developer's obviously high level of passion for the source material. Along with including playable versions of some of the most obscure characters in the Star Wars universe, The Skywalker Saga was packed to the brim with Easter eggs and references, ranging from tongue-in-cheek jokes placed in the titles of side missions, to the classic visual gags that hearken back to LEGO games of old. TT Games was clearly extremely passionate about the Star Wars license, and it shows in every second of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. It's vital that the next licensed LEGO game features just as much passion from the devs.

According to the latest rumors, a LEGO Harry Potter game is up next. While LEGO hasn't confirmed it, a Harry Potter game similar to The Skywalker Saga does make complete sense. Though the series' creator is a constant point of controversy, Harry Potter is still one of LEGO's most successful lines, and with the unprecedented success of Hogwarts Legacy throughout the year, it only makes sense that LEGO would want a piece of the pie. Harry Potter is a great pick for a Skywalker Saga-like experience, with a ton of movies to draw inspiration from, countless potential characters, and multiple locations that could serve as expansive open-world hubs. Still, it's going to be a tough job to top LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
