Highlights

  • The LEGO Star Wars franchise has been a huge success since it began in 2005, with various games covering different parts of the Star Wars universe.
  • While the next LEGO Star Wars game could explore other parts of the series, such as The Clone Wars or the anthology films, the Rise of the Empire period seems like the best choice due to its popularity and potential for adaptation.
  • The Rise of the Empire era offers a wide range of content to explore, including TV shows like The Bad Batch and Rebels, as well as films like Rogue One and Solo, making it an ideal period for LEGO to tap into.

Ever since its inception in 2005, the LEGO Star Wars franchise has been a phenomenon. Through six different games, Traveller's Tales has whisked fans away across the galaxy far, far away. While not every game was a fantastic time, they are still some of the best Star Wars titles around. And now that LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga has hit store shelves, many fans are wondering just where the studio will take the concept next.

Since LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga covered the mainline series, there does not seem to be an obvious direction for the next title. Traveller's Tales could further adapt The Clone Wars with another game, it could explore The Mandalorian and its related shows, or it could simply be an adaptation of the two A Star Wars Story films. While all of that sounds intriguing, the best route forward may be to tap into the extremely popular Rise of the Empire period.

Licensed LEGO games have produced many impressive adaptations, but revisiting a particular franchise could create a game to rival The Skywalker Saga.

Traveller's Tales Has Already Hit the Biggest Star Wars Entries

Traveller's Tales has already adapted much of the mainline series, so fans will likely not want to retread familiar ground. LEGO Star Wars: The Video Gameexplored the Star Wars prequels, LEGO Star Wars 2: The Original Trilogy covered the original films, LEGO Star Wars 3: The Clone Wars adapted the first two seasons of the hit animated show, and LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens lets players experience the first sequel trilogy film in LEGO form. Then, the studio went the extra mile with LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga put all nine films on full display in one of the most innovative LEGO games around. It truly lets players explore practically every corner of this iconic galaxy with some of the most popular characters in the franchise. However, it also left out both anthology films and every single TV show so far. While these characters cropped up in the roster or via the DLC, they hardly got any time to shine within the game itself. But the next LEGO Star Wars title could fix all of that.

The Next Stop for LEGO Star Wars is The Rise of the Empire

Since LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga already covered the main series; the next game needs to do something else with the IP. There is a chance that it explores the era of The Mandalorian and all of its related shows, which could be a fun time if it is done justice. However, the best era to explore next may actually be the Rise of the Empire. Not only is it an extremely popular period in the Star Wars mythos, but there are also countless TV shows waiting to be adapted.

The Rise of the Empire encompasses everything that takes place between the prequels and the originals. It was the time when the Empire reigned supreme across the galaxy and only small pockets of rebellion dared to challenge them. That struggle has been put on full display in The Bad Batch, Rebels, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Andor. Along with those shows, it has also taken center stage in Rogue One and Solo. And all of that content makes it seem like the perfect period for LEGO to tap.

While some of those projects appeared as character packs in other LEGO Star Wars games, none of them have really been explored in a LEGO game fully. But that could all change if Traveller's Tales wanted to delve even further into Star Wars' vast galaxy. Letting players experience some of the best stories the franchise offers in LEGO form just sounds like a recipe for success.
