The Sonic the Hedgehog Lego set looks to be the next major crossover between gaming and the buildable toy company. Following some leaks that previewed the set, fans now have a solid idea of when they can get their hands on the official Sonic the Hedgehog Lego set.

Images of the Lego Sonic the Hedgehog set's packaging leaked online last week, giving fans the first update on the project since its initial confirmation earlier in 2021. The set retains much of the original vision—a proposal based on Sonic Mania—though it has also deviated from that pitch in some key ways too. From the box, it looks like builders got a neat recreation of Green Hill Zone, featuring a minifigure of Sonic , a couple of Badniks, and Dr. Robotnik himself, among a litany of other references. Unfortunately, it was the clear connection to Sonic Mania that has been apparently scrapped, with the Hard-Boiled Heavy robots no longer being present.

Lego has updated its website with a ton of information regarding the official Sonic the Hedgehog set. Those looking to get their hands on the set will not have to wait very long, as the set will be available to purchase on the Lego website starting January 1, 2022 for $69.99. The set joins the Lego Super Mario 64 Question Block set in targeting builders 18 years and older, it having a massive piece count of 1,125 parts. Size-wise, the set is packing a lot of detail into a pretty compact package, it only being 15 inches wide, 7 inches tall, and 3 inches deep, making it a fair display piece that doesn't take up too much space.

The new listing also provides more information about the individual features of the set that weren't quite visible from the previous images. Between a vertical loop that builders can actually push Sonic through, and a lever-activated spring that can bounce Sonic into the air, Lego is making an effort in converting some of Sonic's game mechanics into interactive elements. Included in the set as well are the seven Chaos Emeralds, which builders can display on the buildable stand (although there is sadly no Super Sonic minifigure for him to transform into). When not messing around with the set, it can be set on its display stand that as a nice touch, features Sonic's live count in the bottom left corner.

Overall, it appears that the set is shaping up to be a must-have for Sonic the Hedgehog fans. While being a Lego set, and a pretty difficult-looking one at that, this may be the last time that Sonic appears in this form, and those who may be mildly interested shouldn't be intimidated by it. This was the dream for many since Sonic's appearance in Lego Dimensions many years ago, a full-scale set based on the character and franchise. Who knows, if this does well, maybe more Lego Sonic the Hedgehog sets could be on the way.
