LEGO and the entertainment industry have been no stranger to one another with the iconic brand of building blocks often featuring kits modeled around many of the most popular franchises. The LEGO library has sported not only many of the most popular media franchises from Super Mario Bros. to Sonic the Hedgehog, but LEGO has often ventured into the video game industry with franchises like LEGO Star Wars and LEGO Batman. Now, the newest stunning set from the massive toy brand brings one of the most iconic characters in cartoons in a kit that is "more than meets the eye."
LEGO has gained a reputation in recent years for its array of stunning kits paying homage to many pop culture staples. January saw the release of the highly-anticipated LEGO set inspired by Nintendo's popular Luigi's Mansion and one of LEGO's most stunning sets saw the company re-create the classic Nintendo Entertainment System through the miniature bricks, even including pieces for a LEGO TV featuring a scrolling version of Super Mario Bros' iconic Level 1-1. Now, LEGO has officially partnered with Transformers to bring a stunning recreation of the Autobots' fearless leader, Optimus Prime.
LEGO officially revealed the newest addition to its pop culture lineup Thursday morning, showing off the LEGO Optimus Prime coming to life from a drawing of the character. The figure, based on Optimus Prime's classic appearance, stands at 35 cm tall and even allows fans to shift the completed figure into the iconic truck mode without the need to re-construct the figure, touted by LEGO as one of the few figures capable of "switching between different models without needing to rebuild." The figure will retail for $169.99 when it releases on June 1.
The LEGO Optimus Prime's reveal is just the most recent in a string of creative and unique sets from the children's toy juggernaut. Recent sets have seen LEGO taking many creative liberties with the toys like the previously-mentioned LEGO NES, and others have looked to re-create iconic locations and scenes from pop culture like LEGO's Jurassic Park set released last month recreating the dinosaur movie's classic T-Rex paddock attack scene. Other gaming staples like Atari and additional Super Mario games have also been rumored to be receiving LEGO sets in the future.
LEGO's stunning Optimus Prime figure joins a roster of upcoming products that will have plenty of fans excited about the toy line throughout the coming months. LEGO is gearing up to release the next in its Super Mario line later this year, focused around Princess Peach and including a re-creation of Super Mario 64's Peach's Castle, and Overwatch 2 is set to receive a new LEGO set sometime in the future. The Optimus Prime figure will not only serve as a stunning homage to the classic cartoon but another breathtaking creation from LEGO.
