In the 2024 Summer Game Fest, Guerrilla Games and Studio Gobo officially unveiled the upcoming LEGO Horizon Adventures game. Based primarily on Horizon Zero Dawn, Adventures will have players embody Aloy as she explores a LEGO version of the post-apocalyptic Western United States, encounters robotic LEGO machines, and strives to defeat Helis. Players won’t have to go on this journey alone, as Adventures is enabled with couch or online co-op allowing multiple people to play through a Horizon game for the first time. LEGO Horizon Adventures will be released on the PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC Holiday 2024, but that date can be narrowed down based on prior Horizon games’ release dates.

Previous Horizon Games’ Releases

Horizon Zero Dawn, the first entry of the Horizon series, was first introduced during E3 2015. At the time, the game was expected to be released in 2016, but by the time E3 2016 came around, Horizon Zero Dawn was delayed to February 2017. Horizon Zero Dawn officially launched on PS4 consoles in February 2017 to widespread acclaim. Later in E3 2017, Horizon’s first DLC, The Frozen Wilds, was announced with a broad 2017 release window. Eventually, The Frozen Wilds would release in November 2017 and a few weeks later, Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition would be released as well.

Fans had to wait about two more years for the next installment of the Horizon series to be announced. In June 2020, Horizon Forbidden West was officially revealed with plans for it to be playable on the new PS5 console. By 2021’s State of Play, gameplay of Forbidden West was showcased, but there was still no release date detailed. Finally, by winter 2021, Forbidden West was revealed to launch in February 2022. Horizon Forbidden West officially launched on PS4 and PS5 consoles in February 2022 to widespread acclaim once more. By winter 2022, Guerrilla announced Burning Shores, Forbidden West’s only DLC, to be released in April 2023. A few months later, Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition released in October 2023.

Horizon Call of the Mountain Announcement and Release Dates

In between the launch of Forbidden West and Burning Shores, Horizon Call of the Mountain, the first VR game and spin-off of the Horizon series, was announced in June 2022. By November 2022, Call of the Mountain was announced for a launch in February 2023 exclusively for PSVR2 on PS5 consoles. Horizon Call of the Mountain officially launched on PS5’s PSVR2 in February 2023 to high praise for a VR title.

Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition was brought to PC in August 2020 and would later be joined by Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition on PC in March 2024.

Predicting when LEGO Horizon Adventures will Launch

Given Guerrilla's track record of launching their Horizon titles in late winter, it’s odd to see LEGO Horizon Adventures be joined with a Holiday 2024 release window. LEGO Horizon Adventures is not currently rated, but with its LEGO nature, it will probably have an Everyone 10+ or PEGI 12 rating if the game’s story stays relatively close to Zero Dawn’s. If Adventures is given an Everyone 10+ or PEGI 12 rating, it would make sense to have the game released around the December holidays in order to boost sale opportunities with families. LEGO Horizon Adventures is probably expected to be one of the top games purchased as a holiday gift given its content and wide audience.

However, LEGO Horizon Adventures could potentially be delayed to February 2025. Since this is the first multiplayer Horizon game and the first one to launch simultaneously on Nintendo Switch and PC platforms, Adventures may run into issues that could delay the game. It’s currently unknown how large Adventures will be in terms of storage space and if it’s large, that may cause issues for the Nintendo Switch. The Switch’s cartridges are unable to hold too much data and new games have already struggled to run on the mobile console, such as Mortal Kombat 1. Issues such as this could delay LEGO Horizon Adventures, or at the least the PC and Switch versions, to February 2025.
