  • LEGO Fortnite's combat style, reminiscent of games like Dark Souls, brings a unique and unexpected connection to the game, making it more engaging for players.

LEGO Fortnite has plenty of differences from the main game, but one surprising element unexpectedly draws from the Soulslike gameplay formula. The game has created an impressive new island, complete with its own mechanics that don't appear in Fortnite's main Battle Royale mode. The influence of LEGO is obvious in the core mechanics, emphasizing building to an even greater extent than usual. However, the game taking any mechanics from a Soulslike is a much more unexpected development, albeit not an unwelcome one. If anything, it just adds even more character to the experience of LEGO Fortnite.

Players who step into LEGO Fortnite's survival crafting mode will find a completely different set of rules compared to Battle Royale. Rather than fighting against other players to reach the end, they're tasked with exploring a new island and crafting what they need to survive, from weapons to full buildings. Rather than opposing players and AI henchmen, players have to worry about hostile creatures and the elements themselves. By collecting resources and building villages, players can create a whole world of their own, completely transforming the face of the island. Players looking for a change of pace will probably find a lot to like about LEGO Fortnite.

LEGO Fortnite's Dodge-Based Combat Has a Bit of a Soulslike Flair

A player dodge rolling in LEGO Fortnite

LEGO Fortnite doesn't feature the excellent battle royale combat of Fortnite's main mode, instead using its own formula. Melee weapons like axes and swords are far more prominent, particularly since the player doesn't start with a bow. When unarmed, the player has little hope of fighting anything but spiders successfully. However, even with an actual weapon, they still need to avoid damage due to how hard the enemies can hit. Thankfully, players have access to a dodge roll that is exclusive to the mode. It covers a surprising amount of distance, and it's just as valuable as the player's weapon in a fight.

LEGO Fortnite's formula of dodging and attacking is reminiscent of the combat systems found in Soulslikes such as Dark Souls and Elden Ring. Those games are a world away from LEGO Fortnite in terms of tone and art style, but the fighting style gives them a surprising link. While LEGO Fortnite may not have backstabs or other sorts of finishing moves, a Soulslike player may find themselves surprisingly quick to catch on to the game's style of combat. This is doubly true since LEGO Fortnite is nowhere near as punishing as Dark Souls and similar games, although players still can't get complacent lest they lose a chunk of health.

In addition to dodge-rolling like a Soulslike, the hunger and temperature mechanics of LEGO Fortnite are reminiscent of survival games like ARK: Survival Evolved .

This combat style may not be as attention-grabbing as the LEGO variants of Fortnite's skins, it's a strong addition to the mode. The hit-and-run style of combat is far more suited to the survival aspect of the game than Fortnite's usual running and gunning. It makes sense, considering that Soulslike games are largely about surviving against difficult odds, albeit in a different way. If anything, it gives a bit of extra flavor to LEGO Fortnite's gameplay and makes the combat feel more dynamic. While fighting in LEGO Fortnite isn't as brutal a struggle, it does carry some of the feel of a Soulslike battle.

There's still no evidence that Dark Souls could be among the future crossover events of Fortnite, but a little bit of the game did make its way into LEGO Fortnite. While it remains to be seen what else the mode will have in store for the future, its current state will feel somewhat familiar to those with Soulslike knowledge. While it probably wasn't an intentional reference, LEGO Fortnite's dodge roll is just as useful as Dark Souls', and it's an amusing connection between the two games.
