Following the release of an HD remaster on Switch, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword continues to carry the Zelda legacy well. For better or worse, one Legend of Zelda tradition that never dies is the inclusion of a water dungeon. Sure enough, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword does contain underwater elements similar to its predecessors. Since any gamer with a hint of curiosity will definitely try to swim beneath the surface whenever they find water, this guide will explain how to dive in Skyward Sword.

When Skyward Sword originally launched on the Wii, the game heavily emphasized the use of motion controls. Motion controls are improved in Skyward Sword HD, but fans can also opt for a more traditional gameplay style this time around. Once players have unlocked diving, the act of going underwater simply requires a downward swing or a down press on the D-pad. Before that though, it's necessary to acquire a certain key item.

How to Unlock Diving in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

In order for Link to be able to dive in Skyward Sword, players must first obtain the Water Dragon's Scale. This important object is the reward for completing the Silent Realm trial in Faron Woods. This story event happens fairly early in the overall playtime of Skyward Sword and is necessary for players to access the Lake Floria area.

Farore's Silent Realm will test players by requiring them to collect Tears of Farore. There are 15 of them to find throughout the Silent Realm area, and they must be gathered while avoiding enemies and other threats. Link will not have use of his weapon or any other items, so the trial will necessitate a careful approach on the player's part.

Link will be pursued throughout the trial by Guardians that are even more terrifying than the Breath of the Wild Guardians. Suffering a single hit will result in failure. Luckily, each Tear of Farore that Link picks up will halt the Guardians for 90 seconds.

Completing Farore's Silent Realm may require multiple tries as the player memorizes the locations of the 15 Tears of Farore. Afterward, the hard-earned reward for triumphing over the test will be the Water Dragon's Scale that unlocks the ability to dive in Skyward Sword. This is a key item that will remain in Link's inventory, and there's no need to equip it to be able to dive once it's been obtained.

The Legend of Zelda is notorious as a series for challenging players with unique puzzles. Players will often have to overcome mind-bending trials to get the items needed to continue the journey. Skill in combat is just as important as puzzle-solving intellect though. The bosses in Skyward Sword are sure to stump Zelda fans just as often as the dungeons and puzzles they preside over.
