Highlights

  • LEGO is expanding its video game content by producing real-world sets, starting with Minecraft and now Super Mario.
  • Fans have long awaited a Legend of Zelda LEGO set, with rumors of a Great Deku Tree set increasing in recent weeks.
  • The potential success of a Zelda LEGO set could pave the way for more sets and even a LEGO Zelda video game adaptation.

Beginning in the mid-1990s, LEGO has consistently produced a wealth of video game experiences, ranging from non-licensed city-builders and tycoon games to licensed adventure games that adapt a range of popular movie franchises. In the early 2010s, LEGO's penchant for video games was flipped on its head, and the company started producing real-world LEGO sets based on some popular gaming licenses, with the first being Minecraft, and one of its most recent and successful lines being Super Mario. LEGO's Super Mario line has seemingly been so successful that the company is now eyeing up The Legend of Zelda license.

For years now, it's been rumored that LEGO is working on a Legend of Zelda set, and it seems as though those reports are finally coming to fruition. Last year, it was leaked that LEGO is making a Great Deku Tree set, and that rumor has been given more credence in recent weeks thanks to Bricktastic, who reports that the set will allow fans to build either the Ocarina of Time Deku Tree or the Breath of the Wild one, that it will come with around 2500 pieces, will retail for about $300, and will include four Legend of Zelda Minifigures. While this set sounds great, it should only be the beginning of LEGO and Zelda's partnership.

More LEGO Zelda Sets Are a Must

Ever since the LEGO Ideas program started in 2008, fans have been trying to make a Legend of Zelda set come to fruition, voting on a slew of fan-made set designs over the years and hoping that LEGO will decide to use one of them. Unfortunately, that approach hasn't really worked, but it does show how passionate Legend of Zelda fans are, and it shows that there's a clear demand for a whole range of Zelda-themed LEGO sets, not just one based on the Great Deku Tree.

Over the last four decades, The Legend of Zelda franchise has produced some incredibly iconic moments, set pieces, and structures, many of which would make for excellent real-world LEGO sets. Hyrule Castle, for instance, would be an excellent choice, being a primary focal point of multiple games in the franchise from Ocarina of Time all the way up to Tears of the Kingdom. A smaller-scale set based on Zelda: The Wind Waker's King of Red Lions ship would be another great pick, as would one of Breath of the Wild's Shrines or goblin camps.

LEGO's Zelda Set Should Pave the Way for a Video Game Adaptation

While even more LEGO Legend of Zelda sets would be great to see, that's only skimming the surface of what a partnership between the two brands could offer. This Legend of Zelda LEGO set should pave the way for a full Zelda LEGO video game, and this could materialize in many different ways. With The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom emphasizing building mechanics, that naturally paves the way for a LEGO Zelda game that embraces those features even further. For instance, a LEGO Zelda game could essentially be a gauntlet of Shrine puzzles where the player has to build various devices using LEGO pieces to progress.

We got LEGO Fortnite, and a Horizon LEGO title is rumored to be in the works, so can't we have a full-fledged LEGO Zelda game?

Alternatively, an open-world LEGO Legend of Zelda game could work quite well, again leaning into the building mechanics established in Tears of the Kingdom. LEGO Fortnite is continuing to prove that the open-world genre is a natural fit for a creative LEGO game, and with a Horizon LEGO title allegedly in the works, a fully-fledged LEGO Zelda game would make a lot of sense.
