Amazon has quickly made inroads in the world of fantasy story telling rivalling Warner Bros. whose swath of properties contains Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter with their own takes on Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time novels, their The Rings of Power, and their swing at the gaming sessions of D&D and Critical Role fans worldwide with Vox Machina, now entering its second season set to hit January 20, 2023.

Amazon, through their YouTube channel, dropped a red band trailer—meaning that folks better have understanding bosses if they’re going to sneak a peek at work—for the upcoming season full of all the filth and frivolity fans of the franchise have come to expect.

The trailer opens with four dragons wreaking absolute havoc over the land, burning people and property the same way Harold and Kumar burn through a bag of White Castle burgers. As the shocked cast look on, Keyleth (Marisha Ray) says that it’s like the end of the world. The Chroma Conclave have come to burn things and chew bubblegum and they’re all out of bubblegum. When asked how they plan on stopping four raging dragons, Grog Strangjaw (Travis Willingham) answers: “F*&% s#*t up!” before leaping with his axe at the ready. It immediately shatters against the chest of a dragon and he falls to the ground in a heap. He looks back at his companions with a rueful, “Uh oh.”

The bard, Scanlan Shorthalt (Sam Riegel), rubs his hands together and says that this is going to be fun as a rock beat kicks in on the track. Percy (Taliesin Jaffe) runs from a dragon blast yelling about how he is very flammable. Vex (Laura Bailey) spits out her drink and the audience is treated to a shot of everyone howling with laughter. It cuts to Grog suggesting everyone get a drink, the clinking of mugs, and then the ensuing bar fight (because of course there’s a bar fight). Vex stands outside shouting about how she hopes the @$$hat she’s talking to will fall into lava. The gang have a door slammed on them and Scanlan notes that they’ve set a new record: It unusually takes 10 minutes for them to get kicked out of a palace.

The gang receives weapons intended to strike down the gods and are instructed to use them to hunt down the dragons. Grog screams in a high-pitched squeal of joy when a beard grows on his face. A montage follows of a Scanlan-led concert, a parting of the sea, and various monsters with more teeth and eyes than are strictly necessary. The gang battle various enemies, use various spells, and mess around with various magical trinkets in the irreverent way only they can. The trailer ends with Scanlan saying that he and Vax’ildan (Liam O’Brien) need to get inside a dragon. Vax’ildan says that there’s no way they’re going through a mouthful of acid. Scanlan looks down: “No, the other way.” The last shot after the credits sees Grog putting Scanlan in a baby bjorn.

Vox Machina season 2 lands January 20, 2023.
