With 2021 in the past, developer Riot Games is teasing lots of exciting reveals for fans of the popular MOBA, League of Legends. One such tease details the various champions that makeup Summoner’s Rift. League of Legends just recently revealed Zeri, the newest ADC releasing in a couple of weeks, but in a new dev video, Ryan "Reav3" Mirales, the Lead on the Champion Team at Riot, teased many more exciting changes coming in 2022.

Although initially planning to release a champion for every lane in 2021, Riot only ended up releasing four champions with Vex being the last released in League of Legends. Reav3 has elaborated that Riot wouldn’t be able to release a champion for every lane this year either without compromising how the champion functions. He then goes on to explain what fans can expect, however, for 2022.

Although Riot just revealed Zeri, the developer has decided to go ahead and tease three more champions coming to League of Legends. After Zeri, the next champion will be a support enchanter that will “make support players feel like the boss that they are.” A teaser image was then displayed potentially showing the support augmenting a chem tech suit in some way. From the image alone, it’s also possible this champion is from Zaun due to the possible chem tech suit also seen in Arcane.

A jungle champion which is currently in the works will release afterward. Based on the tease, this champion appears as though it will be from the Void and potentially non-humanoid like Rek’Sai. Reav3 used interesting words, calling this champion “terrifying” and it will “swarm” the rift later this year. Of course, it’s far too early to be completely sure, but based on this tease, it seems as though the new jungler points in that direction. The final champion that was teased was oddly enough, a non-traditional bot lane champion. The only tease displayed was an ambiguous image showcasing several arms perhaps fusing into something else. It’s possible this could be some form of APC but again, it’s far too early to tell.

Lastly, Reav3 gave a small update on VGUs and Udyr who was voted by fans to be the next champion to receive a rework. The antlers that Udyr had were removed and further details on the champion changes will be released in a separate dev blog today. Reav3 then revealed the next 5 champions players can vote to receive a VGU:

  • Shyvana
  • Nocturne
  • Skarner
  • Tryndamere
  • Kog’Maw

The vote for the next League of Legends champion to receive a VGU goes live today and if the recent rework of Dr. Mundo proved anything, it's that simple champions like these can still be interesting. With so much information revealed, fans are already hard at work making connections with the new champions teased and how they might fit into the overall lore. Only time will tell how many of these theories turns out to be true.
