Developer Riot Games has released several videos showcasing the various changes coming to League of Legends in 2022. Apart from the actual champions that inhabit Summoner's Rift, much of the fanbase is excited over the various skins and events that take place. While one of the League of Legends dev videos focused on champions, another focused on the skins and events coming this year.
Jonathan Belliss, the Product Lead for Personalization and Events on League of Legends, went over some of the changes and plans that the game will implement for skins and events. Firstly, occurring sometime in summer is the event pass rework which makes it easier for players to understand and follow. The event pass acts like Battle Passes from other titles such as Fortnite where players will earn rewards after completing challenges and playing matches. The event tokens that were used previously are still going to be the main reward players will earn throughout the event pass.
League of Legends is revamping Mythic content and perhaps the biggest change mentioned is the new purple currency called Mythic Essence which will replace Mythic Gemstones and Prestige Points as the new rare currency. Mythic Essence never expires and players can receive it anywhere Gemstones and Prestige Skins are earned. For those that do have Gemstones and Prestige Skins, it should be noted that they will “expire” when Mythic Essence comes out. Gemstones will be converted into Mythic Essence but it’s not confirmed if that’s a 1 for 1 ratio.
A new Mythic Shop will release later this year which will feature a revolving set of past prestige skins including those from 2018 and 2019. New Prestige skins won’t show up in the Mythic Shop, but after a year, they can become available to purchase there. Original owners of Prestige skins will receive a visual upgrade to display they had the skin since it was first released.
Belliss also revealed that the next champion to receive a visual update after Caitlyn will be Ahri as most of her animations are outdated and she also doesn’t have a recall animation. He then went on to reveal that several seemingly forgotten League of Legends champions will be receiving a skin in 2022 such as Gangplank, Fiddlesticks, and more.
The video is chock-full of other teases for new League of Legends skins such as Battle Bunny skins which looks to give a futuristic warrior bunny aesthetic to champions. Feedback has been quite positive so far with many fans enjoying the new skin lines teased as well as events. An "explainer" will be released with more information for those interested. There aren’t many dates mentioned in the video so although most of these updates will release in 2022, it’s unsure how long fans will have to wait before they’re implemented. For now, though, fans have a lot of information to dig through and get excited about.
