As a result, there are several anime characters that have gone down in history as truly amazing couch potatoes that couldn't be bothered to lift a finger. While these people still made a move when it mattered, the fact of the matter is that laziness is synonymous with the following characters.

Updated December 26, 2022 by Ritwik Mitra: The lazy anime character trope is one of the most popular ones in anime, with the sluggish nature of these characters lending itself to a ton of hilarious moments in their respective shows. That being said, there's no denying that some of these lazy characters end up housing a ton of strength, intellect, or both. Keeping this in mind, here are some of the laziest anime characters of all time who most fans love.

14 Shikamaru Nara (Naruto)

Shikamaru in Uniform

While Shikamaru gets his act together later on in the series, there's no denying the fact that he's easily one of the laziest characters in Naruto early on. Given the competition he had, it's honestly quite amazing that Shikamaru managed to be so lazy.

However, his massive intellect allowed him to get by most situations without too many issues. After the death of his sensei, though, Shikamaru wastes no time in showing just how motivated he can get when it really counts.

13 Kon (Bleach)

Kon in Bleach

Bleach might not have ended on the best note, but the anime definitely had its highlights. In addition to its riveting action and interesting premise, the sheer number of interesting characters present in the show is indicative of this.

Kon is one such character, who was mainly integrated for the purposes of comic relief in. This Mod Soul ends up taking Ichigo's place when he's out in his Shinigami form and is quite a lazy character, especially compared to the other characters who risk themselves fighting evil spirits.

12 Sakata Gintoki (Gintama)

Gintoki Sakata in Gintama

Gintama is one of the best and funniest anime around. There are several reasons why so many people adore Gintama with a passion, and its protagonist Sataka Gintoki is one of the most solid reasons in this regard.

11 Shota Aizawa (My Hero Academia)

Aizawa Smiling in My Hero Academia

Aizawa is another character who falls into the "lazy genius" category. This might seem like it would make him unfit to be a teacher, but this character is definitely quite effective in his job as an instructor to a bunch of boisterous children.

He can get strict in the blink of an eye, even though he might be seeking out his sleeping bag more often than not. However, when a situation escalates, Aizawa is always the first person trying to fix things as soon as possible. He puts in the effort when it really matters.

10 Rangiku Matsumoto (Bleach)

Bleach: Strongest Female Characters, Ranked Rangiku Matsumoto

Bleach is a show filled to the brim with lazy characters, and Rangiku is no exception here. Not only is this character a slacker for the most part, but she also loves to drink and just have fun instead of taking things seriously.

That being said, Rangiku doesn't shy away from showing her feeling, such as when Gin's betrayal left her sad and confused. She might not be the most active character in Bleach, but her abilities make it pretty clear why she's one of the most respected Shinigami in Soul Society.

9 Spike Spiegel (Cowboy Bebop)

Spike Spiegel is one of the most iconic anime characters of all time. His natural coolness and lackadaisical behavior give the impression that this character doesn't like doing anything at all, and just does the bare minimum to get by daily.

However, there's way more to Spike than what meets the eye. This bounty hunter can definitely up the ante whenever required, with his tragic backstory silently fueling the majority of his actions.

8 Usopp (One Piece)

Usopp from One Piece

Usopp has developed quite a bit during his time as a member of the Straw Hat Pirates. However, there was a time when this goofball was solely a comic relief character, and didn't really bring much else to the table.

It didn't help that he wasn't the most motivated character around, often preferring to slack off instead of actually making some contributions. Thankfully, Usopp has finally turned around and has now become one of the most valuable members of the crew.

7 Coyote Starrk (Bleach)

Bleach: Strongest Espada, Ranked Coyote Starrk

The Arrancar are some of the most intriguing antagonists in Bleach. Watching them go toe-to-toe with the strongest captains in Bleach makes for a great time, with the Espada certainly proving their worth as Aizen's strongest warriors.

Coyote Starrk reveals himself as the strongest Espada, with his disinterested and lazy personality masking a good heart and a ton of power to boot. His fight against Shunsui is a blast, with the 1st Division Captain showing exactly why he deserves to be in such a high position.

6 Snorlax (Pokemon)

A Snorlax In The Slakoth Garden

Pokemon is the one of the most valuable and popular IPs around, featuring a bunch of iconic creatures that have become legendary in their own right. One such Pokemon from the first generation who has become legendary in his own right is Snorlax.

This massive Pokemon can easily smash through its enemies if need be. Unfortunately, Snorlax is also extremely lazy and prefers sleeping in inconvenient situations as opposed to actually doing something productive.

5 Sloth (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)

Sloth from Fullmetal Alchemist

A character whose name itself is indicative of his personality, Sloth is a Homunculus that is pretty annoying to deal with in Fullmetal Alchemist. The character can be a huge pain for his enemies when he uses his powers to their fullest; however, that's not often the case.

Unfortunately, Sloth is also extremely lazy and complains about his tasks more often than not. As a result, he doesn't really reach his full potential and becomes one of the more frustrating characters to watch on the show.

4 Tanaka (Tanaka-Kun Is Always Listless)

Tanaka from Tanaka-Kun Is Always Listless

Fans who want to watch a hilarious slice-of-life comedy should definitely check out Tanaka-kun is Always Listless. This show takes a look at the life of a student named Tanaka who is so lazy that he needs to be carried around everywhere by his best friend.

Suffice it to say, this setup lends itself to a bunch of hilarious moments over the 12-episode run of the anime. As is the case with most anime characters who are lazy, he is pretty intelligent and always scores high in his exams.

3 Shunsui Kyoraku (Bleach)

Shunsui Kyoraku in Bleach

For someone who is the Captain of the 1st Division, it's funny to see how laidback Shunsui really is. Of course, all of this is just a front that hides just how monstrously strong this character really is.

His Shikai itself is enough to take out the strongest foes around, and his Bankai is on a completely different level. The fact that his special abilities turn children's games into reality makes for a creative power that Shunsui uses to great effect against his enemies.

2 Nobita Nobi (Doraemon)

Nobita from Doraemon

Doraemon is a pretty popular anime that explored the life of Nobita, who meets a robot that he sent to himself from the future. All issues about changing the past aside, the anime is pretty funny and is a great watch for kids.

Nobita himself isn't the greatest protagonist, however. He's a huge slacker who prefers sleeping over taking his responsibilities seriously. It's hard to believe that this character becomes so successful in the future.

1 Shinnosuke Nohara (Crayon Shin-chan)

Crayon Shin Chan Dance

Crayon Shin-chan is another serialized anime that is pretty popular in its own right and is a big hit with kids. Shinnosuke Nohara, more commonly known as Shin-chan, is the heart of this series.

As is the case with many comedic shows, Shin-chan is extremely lazy and always gets himself into sticky situations. There are times when things work out for him even when he's proactive... although this isn't all that common an occurrence.
