HBO released the official teaser trailer for The Last of Us, based on the smash video games from Naughty Dog. Fans have been waiting for the series ever since it was first announced the production house was taking on the beloved action-horror series about a post-apocalyptic world of mushroom headed zombies.
HBO dropped a teaser trailer for the upcoming adaptation featuring Pedro Pascal's Joel and Bella Ramsey’s Ellie. The Game of Thrones alums reunite in what is sure to be another HBO success.
The series, based on the 2013 game by Naughty Dog, will feature HBO's first ever series adapted from a game and is a joint production also involving Sony Pictures Television, Playstation Productions, and Naughty Dog. It will see ten episodes written by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, who also wrote and directed the original game and its subsequent sequel, The Last of Us Part II. The series, aside from Pascal and Ramsey, will feature Gabriel Luna as Joel's younger brother, Tommy, Anna Torv as Joel's smuggling partner, Tess, and Merle Dandridge as the resistance leader, Marlene. In the game, Joel, a man who has lost his child, teams up with Ellie, a girl without a family, who is immune to the cordyceps virus and possibly holds mankind’s future in her very blood.
The Last of Us trailer opens on footage of signs warning about cordyceps infection while Hank Williams' “Alone and Forsaken” plays over the footage. Joel walks down an apocalyptic street, passing by others trying to go about their daily lives in the blasted hellscape. Two guards monitor a pair of men painting over a Firefly resistance symbol that was painted on a door. Footage then shows Joel seeming lost in thought while Ellie stares at a wall painted with the words, “When you’re lost in the darkness.” The camera pans down and shows that her ankle is chained.
A guarded gateway with a Welcome sign doesn’t seem very welcoming and Joel and Ellie hunker down in a giant outtake pipe while lights flash overhead. The vista then opens up to one gamers will be very familiar with: crumbled cityscapes overgrown with plants and fields of dead bodies. Joel and Ellie hold up in a room while an anonymous silhouette goes clicking by, Joel holding a finger to his lips to signal being quiet while watching Ellie. A montage follows: Joel and Ellie on a merry-go-round, Joel fending off attackers, guards and citizenry going at it, being held at gunpoint by Nick Offerman's Bill,
It continues with Joel viciously beating somebody up, Ellie crawling under a desk and away from something in terror, Melanie Lynskey looking tough and walking through a crowd of armed men, what looks to be a shot of society going wild and people fleeing everywhere while fires rage (possibly a flashback to when the virus first broke, something experienced in the very beginning of the game). That's not to mention horses being ridden across a snowy plain, more people fleeing, a bloody Joel holding Ellie and looking panicked, an ominous full-face shot of one of the game’s infamous cordyceps clickers, and finally Joel and Ellie setting off on their harrowing journey.
The Last of Us will land on HBO in 2023.
