The Last of Us multiplayer game may still be in the works. The original Last of Us game launched with the popular Factions multiplayer mode, and so many fans were hoping to see a continuation in The Last of Us 2. Unfortunately for multiplayer-minded games, Naughty Dog decided to ship The Last of Us 2 as a strictly single-player experience, with no multiplayer mode whatsoever.
While The Last of Us 2 was released as a single-player game, that didn't mean that Naughty Dog was abandoning the idea of a multiplayer experience set in the franchise's universe. At Summer Game Fest 2022, Naughty Dog provided a big update on The Last of Us multiplayer game, revealing concept art and confirming that it was going to release as a standalone experience as opposed to as a multiplayer update for Last of Us 2.

Following recent layoffs at Naughty Dog, reports surfaced that the developer had potentially canceled its Last of Us multiplayer game. No official statements have been released debunking those rumors until now. As spotted by Push Square, game director of The Last of Us multiplayer project, Vinit Agarwal, recently took to Twitter to celebrate his completion of Super Mario Bros. Wonder. His tweet included a short statement at the end, "And so this tweet can live on in peace... yes, I'm still working on that game."
Is The Last of Us Multiplayer PS5 Game Still Happening?
Agarwal's tweet certainly suggests that The Last of Us multiplayer game hasn't been canceled yet. This should give franchise fans some hope, though it ultimately remains to be seen what shape the project will take. Previous reports have suggested that Sony was slowing down development on the game, and that fellow PlayStation studio Bungie had a negative evaluation of the title. Whatever the case may be, hopefully Last of Us fans get some clarification sooner rather than later.
The jury is still out on whether The Last of Us multiplayer game will ever see the light of day, but there should still be plenty for franchise fans to look forward to in the future. It's inevitable that The Last of Us 3 is in development, plus there are more seasons of The Last of Us HBO series on the way.
In fact, HBO recently gave an update on The Last of Us TV series. The Last of Us Season 2 will start filming in 2024, and will likely premiere at some point in 2025. While that's quite a long wait, it will likely be worth it.
