The Last of Us: Part 2 gameplay may include combat on horseback, according to the game's director Neil Druckmann. The gameplay tease follows another reveal by the developer earlier this week as Druckmann says he wants the game to have better graphics than Horizon Zero Dawn.

On Twitter earlier today, Druckmann tweeted a photo update showing his day at work with co-writer (and former Westworld writer) Halley Gross. Joking that Gross "scares" him, many fans appreciated the brief glimpse at the ongoing development of the game. However, many were also quick to point out that Druckmann may have let the cat out of the bag about a potential The Last of Us: Part Two gameplay feature.

In the photo, Gross seems to be on top of a makeshift horse that may be being used for a mocap session, or may be used to give the writers some visual inspiration for a particular scene. The writer also seems to be brandishing a shotgun, leading some to suggest that The Last of Us: Part Two protagonist Ellie may well find herself fighting infected enemies from a horse – or she may find herself escaping from them on horseback instead.

The Last of Us: Part Two development team at Naughty Dog is known for its teasing, having alluded to the highly anticipated game with concept art months before its official reveal. The first game also featured some horse riding too, so it stands to reason that Druckmann really did mean to stoke the fires and whip fans into a frenzy imagining all kinds of gameplay scenarios with this tweet.

Unfortunately, it could be some time until fans actually get to see said horseback combat gameplay in action, as The Last of Us: Part 2 is said to be in very early development. Although the official announcement of the game impressed and hinted at all manner of things (including whether Joel will or won't be returning in the much talked about follow up), it's certainly still a long way off of showing actual gameplay.

In fact, there isn't even a release date attached to the title as publisher Sony said it has learned from its past release date mistakes. Essentially, the new Naughty Dog game will be ready when it's ready and not a moment before, but many fans will agree that getting by on social media teases will be somewhat difficult in the meantime.

The Last of Us: Part 2 is currently in development for PS4.
