Naughty Dog's 2020 game received widespread praise for its engaging gameplay and immersive storytelling full of tragic twists and turns. And though The Last of Us 2's moments of levity are few and far between, that hasn't stopped the fandom from engaging in all sorts of entertaining shenanigans that stand out from its bleak world.
Content creator OreVsWorld has undertaken many such feats since the game's release, with one of their most frequently revisited ideas being to improvise on the "ambush of the year" theme. As part of one such effort, the player had Ellie crawl onto a derelict couch and then turn on her back, positioning her on the armrest like she's about to doze off. But since The Last of Us 2 doesn't offer power naps as a gameplay mechanic, the player settled with hurling Molotov cocktails at a nearby patrol from that laid-back position. Their Ellie then casually watched two unsuspecting enemies grapple with fire, before eventually leaning over the backrest to put the last of them out of his misery with a headshot.
This funny feat was one of OreVsWorld's earliest attempts at convoluted ambushes in The Last of Us 2, with the clip itself dating back to late March. But it's also among the content creator's most popular such undertakings to date, as underlined by the fact that it amassed nearly eight million views on TikTok over the following six months. Its actual reach is plausibly even higher, since the video continues to make the rounds on social media, having most recently reemerged on the front page of the r/TheLastOfUs subreddit in late September.
Apart from its entertainment value, the video is also notable for underlining The Last of Us 2's incredibly tight stealth mechanics that strike a great balance between fun and realism. Enemies do tend to overlook details like Ellie's head sticking out behind a couch, but their overall lines of sight and hearing ranges tend to be believable enough to keep the player immersed in the game's world without being too punishing.
These widely praised stealth mechanics are likely to be revisited by Naughty Dog in the future, possibly starting with the upcoming The Last of Us multiplayer spin-off. But even if that title ends up being entirely action-oriented, that ostensibly won't be the case with The Last of Us 3 that Neil Druckmann himself is already hinting at.
