It's been 35 years since audiences first traveled to Goblin City with Sarah in Lucasfilm and The Jim Henson Company's Labyrinth, but the film remains as memorable and timeless as it ever was. To celebrate its 35th anniversary, the film will be released on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray along with special bonus features that will take fans behind the curtain of the making of Labyrinth.

The phrase "you have no power over me" does not apply here, as this special edition will include over 25 minutes of never-before-seen deleted scenes and alternate takes. Brian Henson, puppeteer coordinator and head of The Jim Henson Company, will also be providing commentary on the bonus footage. The collectible will also include script pages from the Henson archives, rare artwork, photography, and footage of Jennifer Connelly's screen test for Sarah. It's impossible to imagine anyone but Connelly in the role, but the re-release will also include screen tests for the role from iconic '80s actresses like Molly Ringwald (Sixteen Candles), Tracey Gold (Growing Pains), and Trini Alvarado (The Frighteners).

Also included are several documentaries such as "Inside the Labyrinth," "The Quest For Goblin City," and "Kingdom of Characters." There will also be a picture-in-picture commentary from conceptual designer Brian Froud, who is largely responsible for imagining the fantastical look and feel the film is famous for. The featurette titled "The Henson Legacy" will surely touch on the film's director, Muppet legend Jim Henson, as well as the many creatures that bring Labyrinth to life.

Labyrinth

Labyrinth is known just as much for its unforgettable soundtrack as it is for the characters and sets. For those who are just excited to crank up "Magic Dance" or the moodier "As The World Falls Down," there will also be audio options of either 5.1 surround sound or the original theatrical 2-channel version.

It's hard to think about Labyrinth without acknowledging David Bowie's iconic turn as Jareth, the sparkly and graceful Goblin King himself. Bowie passed away in 2016, but his role in the film as well as his contribution to pop culture will likely never be forgotten." Remembering the Goblin King" is sure to be a nostalgic and special look at the man behind the character.

The excitement for Labyrinth fans doesn't stop at the release of the special edition disc. The untitled sequel is finally moving forward after first being announced in 2014. Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange) will be directing the film, which was written by Maggie Levin (Into the Dark). IMDb describes the storyline simply as, "a mythical princess searches for her father in a perilous labyrinth." Until then, fans can rewatch the original film and dive into the many new and special features.

The 4k Ultra HD edition of Labyrinth will be available on August 17, 2021.
