Against the mighty Kowloon Hydra, Kazuma and his party barely escape with their lives. Normally, they'd simply give up and find another quest to undertake, but for whatever reason, Darkness is insistent on beating the Hydra, no matter what it takes. With no help coming from the capital due to Kazuma's antics, it's up to the town of Axel to make sure this monster goes down.

This week's episode of KonoSuba continues to ramp up the concern behind Darkness, whose strange actions throughout this episode bring up questions about her true motivations. The series is clearly ramping up to a big reveal behind her situation soon, but isn't ready to reveal it yet. Despite all that, the episode is a fun romp that shows KonoSuba can do action when it wants to.

Solving The Hydra Problem

KonoSuba S3 E8 Kazuma and Darkness covered in slime

After enraging the Kowloon Hydra in the last episode, the party barely manage to escape intact, with Kazuma needing to be resurrected by Aqua yet again. Kazuma ends up losing his clothes, as they were digested by the Hydra, and is surprised to hear that Darkness was the one who pulled his body out. The party return to Axel to regroup and recover for a moment, and while Kazuma cleans off the slime of the Hydra's fluids, he wonders why Darkness is still insistent on finishing the quest.

At the tavern, Kazuma and Darkness find Aqua and Megumin cornered by the local adventurers, who are concerned that the Hydra has become enraged. Normally, the capital sends knights out to hunt the Hydra when it becomes active, but due to Kazuma and Chris's actions as the Silver-Haired Thief Brigade, the knights are too busy trying to find the treasures they stole to come help. With a massive bounty put out on the thieves, and the possibility that the two are hiding in Axel, the adventurers decide that in order to get the knights to come defeat the Hydra, they need to find the thieves first.

Battle Against The Hydra

Axel's Invincible Bonds

KonoSuba S3 E8 Kazuma brings everyone

With the Hydra still a problem and the town out looking for the thieves, Kazuma decides to hole out in the mansion, with Aqua still fussing over the "dragon" egg she bought. To his surprise, Megumin and Darkness have been going out to the lake to whittle down the Hydra's magical power with Explosion magic. Surprised at Darkness's persistence even when her life is in danger, Kazuma feels compelled to at least help her out by fixing up her armor, while also reminding her that she has friends and not to do things on her own.

Despite this, Darkness still goes off to fight the Hydra on her own. While Aqua and Megumin go to stall her, Kazuma rounds up all the adventurers in town and gets them to help in the fight against the Hydra. The adventurers work together to use their various skills to tie down and restrain the Hydra, while Kazuma gets launched onto the Hydra's back, where he uses Drain Touch to absorb the Hydra's immense magical power to hinder its regeneration. However, the Hydra overpowers the adventurers, causing it to flip over. Darkness is the only thing keeping Kazuma from being crushed by the Hydra, but due to a mix of Kazuma's Drain Touch, Darkness's fetishes, and the efforts of the adventurers, Kazuma manages to avoid death. Megumin finishes off the Hydra with a massive explosion, resulting in victory for the entire town of Axel.

KonoSuba is a parody of both isekai and fantasy anime with various strengths, and these are all of the characters ranked.

Darkness's Mysterious Motivations

The Crusader's Strange Stubbornness

KonoSuba S3 E8 Darkness In Deep Thought

While the majority of the episode is concerned with the adventurers' battle against the Hydra, an open question throughout the entirety of the episode is Darkness's motivation for taking on the quest in the first place. Taking on the Hydra quest was her idea, and she was unusually persistent about it as well. Kazuma seems to realize that there is more to the situation than he currently understands, but he doesn't really push her to explain herself. In the end, Darkness never explains her reasons, even after leaving the party at the end of the episode.

Darkness's sudden departure is certainly shocking, but there's no question that it is somehow connected to the bad fortune Vanir gave her in the last episode, as well as the news that her father has been ill recently. Lord Alderp is also certainly involved, although how is not clear yet. While the season is starting to wrap up soon with only a few episodes left, it's clear that there's still one big story left to tell, and Darkness is right at the center of it. The climax of the season is yet to come, and there are still plenty of exciting and hilarious moments.
