Kodansha Comics announced that it will be publishing all 25 volumes of Tohru Fujisawa's Great Teacher Onizuka and all 9 volumes of the GTO: 14 Daysin Shonan spin-off on Monday.
Both series will be published digitally and will be made available on February 1. The manga will be sold on a variety of digital marketplaces, including BookWalker, Comixology, Kindle, Apple Books, Google Play, Nook, Kobo, izneo, MyAnimeList and others.
Tooru Fujisawa’s Great Teacher Onizuka manga ran in Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine from 1997-2002. The series serves as a continuation of Fujisawa’s previous series, Shonan Junai Gumi, which ran in Weekly Shōnen Magazine from 1990-1996 and was compiled into 31 tankōbon volumes.
The popularity of the manga inspired a variety of adaptations, with various TV dramas produced from 1998-2011. The latest series, directed by Ken Iizuka, aired on Fuji TV and Kansai TV in 2014 from July-September. Masayuki Suzuki directed a live-action film adaptation of the series in 1999.
Studio Pierrot animated a 43-episode anime adaptation from 1999-2000. The series aired on Fuji TV and is licensed by Discotek Media in North America. Noriyuki Abe (Yu Yu Hakusho, Bleach) directed the series, with Masashi Sogo (From the New World, Fairy Tail) handling the script and Yusuke Honma (Flame of Recca, Blue Legend Shoot!) composing the music.
The GTO: 14 Days in Shonan spin-off series ran in Weekly Shōnen Magazine from 2009-2011. The series takes place following the Teshigawara arc and follows Onizuka’s two-week-long exploits that were left obscure in the original manga. Another spin-off manga, GTO: Paradise Lost, is currently running in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine. The series began serialization in 2014 and has amassed 17 collected volumes throughout its run so far.
Tokyopop previously licensed Great Teacher Onizuka and Shonan Junai Gumi in English. Vertical initially released GTO: 14 Days in Shonan in its entirety physically from 2012-2013.
