Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery has finally hit Netflix after a limited-run theatrical release, and fans are eagerly awaiting news about the next installment, and it appears they won't have to wait too long. Director, creator, and writer Rian Johnson is currently working on the script for Knives Out 3.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is the second film to center on Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), a detective who frequently takes on eccentric cases. This installment takes Blanc to a private island, where billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) has invited a cadre of his influential friends to play a game of murder mystery. The cast features notable names such as Kathryn Hahn, Janelle Monae, and Dave Bautista, whom Johnson called the best wrestler-turned-actor ever.

In an interview with Wired, Johnson talked about his foray into the whodunnit genre. "So much of what I’m trying to do, because I’m starting to write the next one, is really just about trying to clear my head and think about what’s on my mind right now," Johnson said when asked about the intended chronology and setting of the series. "Hopefully that translates in some way to what’s on all of our minds right now in terms of culture."

In that answer, Johnson dropped that he was already working on writing the next film. With the script being one of the earliest pieces of the puzzle, it's unlikely that Johnson has locked down any cast members just yet (beyond Craig). Knives Out 2 featured some intriguing cameos, including the late Stephen Sondheim and Angela Lansbury, and Johnson may have some new names in mind already.

The Knives Out 2 ending also makes it unlikely that any of the suspects from this particular caper will be coming back. Johnson has made it clear that he intends to make every film a standalone. While Benoit Blanc serves as the connective tissue between each case, the suspects from Knives Out and Glass Onion are unlikely to cross paths with him again.

Glass Onion does, however, make a reveal about Benoit Blanc's sexuality: the detective is a gay man and married to a character played by Hugh Grant. Grant may be back at some point in the future, though the films don't focus too much on Blanc's personal life. Another character who may return (though it's unlikely) is one portrayed by Janelle Monae. She turns out to be a key piece of Blanc's investigation in Knives Out 2, an adept detective, and the two have great chemistry together. On the other hand, she may join the likes of Marta (Ana de Armas) from Knives Out as someone who had a profound experience with Blanc, only to go her own way in the end.
