Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe may be a remake of the original Wii release of the same title, but it still manages to feel completely fresh. With overhauled graphics, new copy abilities, animations, and even a new bonus level called the Magalor Epilogue, everyone will want to get in on the Kirby action.

Thankfully, like the original version of Return to Dreamland for the Wii, it is also a couch co-op game, supporting up to four players on the same Switch. Players can play on their own or bring in the whole family. But first, they will need to unlock multiplayer in this kid-friendly Kirby title.

The family-friendly co-op mode in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe unlocks immediately as soon as players enter the first level in the first world. There will be a pop-up explaining that multiplayer can enter and exit at any time during a level or battle. Players can co-op immediately with up to three others for every level in the game.

How Co-Op Works in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

First, players need to connect at least one more Joy-Con to the Switch. Players can either play with full sets of Joy-Cons or with a single Joy-Con turned sideways. Once the additional controllers are connected, the new player needs to hit the bumper buttons. They will then have a choice between four companion characters:

  • Meta Knight
  • A different color of Kirby
  • Bandana Waddle Dee
  • King Dedede

Players can ride on each other's backs while running or flying. Kirby can inhale his friends and spit them back out to hit enemies. If the other players get too far away from player 1, they will get zoomed back to them. Kirby can pick up copy abilities and super copy abilities, but the others will not be able to.

If a Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe player grabs up all the food and has eaten more than they can use, they can share by walking past their friend; this will fill up both players' health as far as the consumed food can.

At the end of each level, players also get to do the Team Bonus game, collecting additional items, stars, and food.

Additional players can drop out at any time by holding the same button to release Kirby's copy abilities. While this co-op is not available for online play, there are some other features that Kirby can play over the internet.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe is available for Nintendo Switch.
